Race Coils - where?

While the engine is away getting reworked - I have been busy fitting the AMS Ram airbox, cutting the hole in the radiator, sealing it all up and refitting etc etc

. Thought I had got it sorted but when offered it all up today I realised that the coils cant go where they would normally fit as they then foul the new air intake

. Looks like I need to slide them along the frame a bit - which means moving the mountings etc. This is a bit of a pisser as it will need a bit of welding - unless there is a better solution?? Any ideas?
Radiator cutting, and epoxy sealing couldnt have been easier - there was a thread on here a while back on that - cant remeber who raised it but once I got over the reluctance to take a hacksaw to a perfectly good rad it went really easy. Used an epoxy metal (J&B Weld) - worked a treat- quick spray with matt black and good as new
On a slightly different subject - I have the AMS airbox but not the full fairing (I already had a standard fairing and there is a budget limit here!!!) however - not convinved that the air intake alone will do a great job as it is located just above the radiator in "dirty air" rather than in an area of clean airflow at the front of the fairing. Was thinking about making a homemade extension that would run from the intake to the front of the fairing and sit just under the nose cone (using the fairing fasteners for support). This will test my fibreglass skills to the limit so before I get on with this - anyone got any experience/ data of the difference between the radiator top inlet and the full extension to the front of the nose cone - does it make any difference??

the popular place for the coils is just behind the clocks, and use longer leads. good to keep them cool i guess, but i have mine just under the airbox, ziptied to the frame brace( h frame).. and they run fine there.
as for the extended scoop...im not sure.. some will say yah, other will say no.
I run mine just like yours, finishing at the rad and its fine... thats also how they ran the f3 zxrs..
but then again gp bikes run the scoop to the front so maybee there is something init? did you get the ams bellmouths too? and any luck finding a set of those special things?

Hi Jake - thanks for the advice - will have a look today to see what works best. Behind the clocks sounds a good idea.
I think I am going to give the extended scoop a miss - already have a load to do so adding to the list isnt goingn to help me get this finished! Am hoping to get the engine back in a week or so and the rebuilt starts big time engine is coming back with porting, the F3 cams etc. Got the AMS carb plate and have a few other goodies to go on (flextech shock, steering damper and upgraded calipers) and yep - got em though still to get installed

Ignore the bit about the difference that the front fairing intake makes over the radiator top. Just checked my notes and Roger M answered this for me a while back but it had slipped passed me - Roger reckoned about 1 -1.5BHP difference between the front fairing intake and the radiator top intake

Wow thats quite a difference Dave. I have fitted the Kawasaki Kit box and like yours it stops at the top of the rad, but reading other posts they only make between 1 to 2 BHP difference anyway. Hitting the runway at Edzell as soon as the weather is better so I will see how it feels. Managed to get proper Bell mouths with the 2 inner cylinders having longer intakes which is supposedly better than the plate you get with the airbox, but we will see!!

Hi Colin - it makes a bit of sense when you think about it as the airflow at the top of the rad is pretty "messy". I am not going to bother at the minute as i have plenty of other stuff to get sorted but might eventually see what I can do to rig up an estnesion to the intake to pick up air just below the fairing.
ps - whats the deal with edzell runway - do they organise testing sessions on specific days?
I am trying to resist the temptation to enter another class as I have so much to do to get the bike ready and am a bit limited on time. I get the engine back from Stuart at YPE w/e 18th (gas flowed, F3 cams, increased comp ratio) - hoping for 75-76nhp.
If I can get a "steely" or a senior forgotten era bike which doesnt need much done to it then might enter either at E Fortune

I have done my engine myself. Taking it to Bobs next week, but hoping for 72BHP. I sorted out Edzell through a friend. Hoping it will help me set up the jetting. If it is after you get your engine back I will give you a shout.
I have a steel frame CBR600 for sale with a Fireblade engine fitted!!!

Dynotech did a lot of testing with ram air boxes and found that on a kit box (or a kit copy) a funnel to the front of the fairing made no difference. As long as the AMS box has the same capacity as the kit boxes, which I beleive they do, then no need for a funnel

. (I beleive that the RMKD box has a smaller capacity and makes up for it with the funnel, hence the extra bhp shown on that box)
Coils can be fitted inside the kit ramair boxes if necessary, I just cable tied mine to the frame

Great - thanks for the info that saves a bit of time. I thought about putting the coils in the air box but there is then another couple of penetrations through the box for the HT leads although sealing them wouldnt be a big deal.

Colin - you are a bit ahead of me on the work. I am away for a week skiing but will pick engine up w/c 18th and then really need to get my act together - aiming for first run at the end of the month with a month then for sorting carbs etc etc. There is a test day at E Fortune mid march so I am aiming for that.
How much you want for the "600blade"

Was hoping for £700. It is a 92 CBR600 with 98 bodywork and a stock 98 Blade motor. Dynojet kit, Bellmouths, Ohlins race unit on rear, braided lines, etc. Needs a bit of TLC as it has sat around for a while, but runs well. Would be a good project.

Colin - thats a great price and I could have some trackday fun on that

but I need another distraction like a hole in the head if i am to get the race bike sorted!!
I am a sucker for bike projects and I suspect the only way to ship out some of the bikes waiting in the garage for refurb will be to break em

. I almost bought a gpz1000 (resisted the temptation) then almost (resisted again) a great deal on a FZR1000 . Both were 1987 and would have been perfect for Senior Forgotten Era but i just need to get my head down and sort the race bike and get on the track!! Happy days!!

i have taken them from the original place and moved them to the side of the frame. turn them 90 deg and bolt them to the fairing brace using one bolt. you can then run the ht leads under the frame. the low tension leads go through the original cable holes. as a bonus it also keeps them cooler. you just have to watch the steering lock dosn' foul them.
