I know the top racers are seriously fit, but what about the club racers?

Next years going to be my first year racing so im planning on getting a bit fitter. Ive only been running 3 times a week at the moment but am going to join the local gym and start doing some weights too.
Do you do light weights with high reps so as not to put too much muscle mass on? because being 13 stone i dont really want that.
Cheers

I do a weights class called Bodypump................you can read about online look for the Les Mills website.
I do it about 2 maybe 3 times a week it's set to music and it's great fun...........but you would never build mass/muscle it more a toning thing going on.
The cheapest tuning you can do for you bike is to loose some weight yourself so burn those calories and go faster.
Spin is another excellent class again set to music and a real calorie burner. I've just come home from a spin class and as it's a good one with a brilliant instructor lots of calories get burned.
Running is good too but you need to have the right shoes and be carefull not to damage your feet ankles or knees. So I only run once or twice a week but I do enter and run lots of races mostly 5 or 10K but marathons too when I can Also look out for mad silly endurance type events we have one here call Mud Madness very tough but great fun.
I do a 5K timed run most Saturday mornings it's a national thing with 5K runs all over the UK every Saturday at the same time there are tens of thousands of people doing it............... find one near to you it's called Parkrun and as it's timed you can use it to measure your fitness progressing and getting better week by week

I cycle to work and back everyday, albeit its not far away, but then cycle up to 100 miles per week on top (although I have not had the time for this much recently). Its made a difference to leg strength for moving about on the bike, but I really need to do upper body stuff to balance it out. I get to bored at the gym tho.

Yup the gym bores the pi55 out of me too. I've done British military fitness since the beginning of the year and noticed a huge difference. It's basically an hour of circuit training outdoors. Two or three times a week will sort you right out!

Gym can be very boring...............nothing worse than running on a threadmill or whatever all on your own
Thats why I do classes...................you get to meet people and make friends......................it is as much a social event as a trainning session and you can help motovate each other. Funny enough males tend NOT to do classes in the gym..................and I've no idea why not ?
I did a spin class on Thursday and it was me in a room of lycra covered females.....................how could that not be fun..............definately NOT boring
