Am I correct (or typically incorrect) that there is actually different types of of SP gearbox. i.e that the H Sp had different ratios (in particular a higher 1st gear) to the L SP. I only ask as I was told this but had never heard it before?

good question and I dont know for sure

Both mine are L model SP boxes............and first is certainly quite tall and very usable for slow corners...................generally speaking for most circuits that I've raced on the difference in overall gearing between SP and regular boxes is one tooth on the front sprocket so for SP I'd use 16/45 but for regular gearbox on the same circuit it's 15/45.

Certainly I think standard sprocket sizes are ther same on both H and L

Yes i know the price is ok but it's hard to find!

Thanks a lot!

If someone has an L gearbox from SP i'm OK!

would you not get the same effect by changing sprocks,as having an sp box??

The ratios are closer, so the revs don't drop much from one gear to the next, therefore the engine is kept in the powerband for longer. The disadvantage (on a five lapper at Brands Indy :smt019 ) is that the first gear is quite tall, so a quick launch takes a lot of practice ! I haven't quite got this sussed yet confuddled

I waited for a set of L SP gears to come along for about a year, but ended up buying a whole SP in order to get the gears.

First one I got came from the remains of an engine the guy had no idea that his bike had been a SP bodged one good running bike from two..............I got the carbs and cams too.

Second one came from a complete SP that I bought and and broke sold the remains for a little less than what I'd paid but I kept the goodies :smt002

I find the SP first gear to be great for slow corners...................just brake hard and late and keep clicking down gears till it wont click anymore and chuck it at the corner.
The close ratios make for easier and less likely to lock uo down changes too...................no slipper clutch required

so my bike is just a regular h,so if i was to add an sp extra the gear box sounds like it would be the best option, for trackdays, besides the flatsides or cams?
would i get a better bang for my 300+ quid with the gear box?

I dont think gearboxes give "better bang"

As ever with trying to get more speed and lower lap times you pay your money and take your choice.........

but for track day fun do you really need the few tenths gained ?

Better and cheaper to go lose a stone in weight

Yes i agree but my bike weights aprox 135 KG and i'm only riding on track with.
That's the reason why the gearbox is the next step for me.

Anybody have that ?? HELP

As others have said, they are rare, very rare and anyone who has one usually wants to keep it. Ive just got myself one, but I had to buy a complete Sp in order to get that. Havent tried it yet, I hoping it'll drop my lap times by about 10 seconds :pmsl

Actually, I just wanted one because normal first gear is pretty useless on most tracks, losing the Christmas pounds is likely to drop my laptimes by much more. One came up on Ebay a few weeks back but I'm sure it went for 300 odd.

I've had a text on this SP gearbox topic

H1 SP CR gearbox has a very tall first gear H2 less so and L less so again but still taller than the regular gearbox
