Does anybody use a quick shifter, I have been thinking of fitting one over the winter for next season, most of the manufacturers seem to say you can expect to cut between 1sec and 3 secs per lap by using one,sounds a bit optimistic to me also can it cause gearbox problems as I believe the zxr gearbox is not the strongest, If they are worthwhile which ones do you recomend?.

Was just reading up on them yesterday as i had driven a ZRX1200 with one on it and wondered about one for the ZXR.

Think the times they are quoting is when you are using your clutch to go up the box , personally I do clutchless changes so think the difference would be negligible.

However, you shouldn't hit false neutrals using one or partial engagements and that's where you could gain the best time from.

Can't say I noticed a huge difference except it was strange not to back the throttle off

To gain 1-3 seconds a lap would either have to be a very long lap or that you were really crap at gear changes inthe first place! I'd say that anything more than half a second would be optimistic.

I've raced for a number of years, most of which have been using a quick shifter. I didn't use one last season on my ZXR, but will be fitting one over the Winter. My ZXR box is very smooth and positive so I didn't really see the need, but I like to just roll the throttle to change and I found a few times this year I was obviously a bit lazy and sometimes it just didn't shift, hence I'm now going to fit one. That said, I probably only lost a couple of tenths a second a lap at the most.

If you're not very good with gear changes then they're worth it, but otherwise if you can roll the throttle and snick your gears smoothly and reliably, you won't notice much difference. For a performance advantage comparison, a QAT is worth far more IMO and it would be way down my list of mods behind suspension, etc.

I understood the ZXR box was actually quite strong and there are few problems generally, but either way if it's set up correctly it shouldn't harm the gearbox. Of the various racebikes I've run them on I've never had one damage a gearbox.

I'd tend to agree with you I use the SP CR gearbox and have clutchless gear changes off to a fine art might not as good as a quickshifter but plenty good enough for me. Anyway most of the TT course on a 400 is flat in top why would I need a quickshifter LOL

As for ZXR gearboxes....................they seem pretty tough to me maybe thats why I cant sell any of the spare ones I have LOL

give chris and mike a call at dynopro, im sure they where getting dynojet ones or something at very good prices.
Mike uses them on his vfr i think.

where you racing next year mate? Im thinking of trying some other clubs next season

I tried one last season for one race, didn't like it at all but there is a gain to be had with practice. I'll be using mine next year. The dynojet one from Chris at dynopro is a hell of a lot better than the techtronic one in my opinion. But it was wired through the coils ,where as the dynojet one is though my dynopro cdi direct

Thanks for your advice everyone, looks like there are quite a mixed bag of opinions, I think I will try the clutchless changes first as I have allways used the clutch both up and down the box (and it wont cost anything).
Jake I am going to try and do a full season with Bemsee next year, I did three races this year with them and I was impressed by how quick they got the races out and the level of competion, I think I will be able to learn a lot if I can latch on to some of the quick riders ( which seems to be the full field).
