my zxr just tried to kill me

decided to take the bike out for a mad half hour since im off today and the sun is out. after flying about for 20 mins or so the throttle suddenly jammed open making the bike rev its tits off. only thing i could do was pull the clutch and then it revved that much i thought it would blow up. sat at a junction (luckily at the end of my street) and had to keep flicking the kill switch on and off to stop the revs getting to high untill i could pull out, then when i do pull out it wants to be away so im pulling the clutch, putting the brakes on and trying to let the clutch in and out so i can move at a reasonable speed and its trying its best to push away my front wheel. not good. now im not at all mechanically minded but im guessing there are two cables on the throttle, one to pull open and one to pull shut? if this is the case am i right in assuming the "shut cable may be stretched and so not operating properly and is it an easy fix?

any help and advice would be much appreciated.

cheers, deej

you are right there are SUPPOSED to be 2 cables, one to accelerate and one to decellerate, god knows why but usually the decellerate cable snaps and noone replaces it.its there for a reason for example when your accelerate cable jams open..........

cheers for the quick reply. ive had a poke about and there definately is 2 cables there so im assuming it either stretched or snapped somewhere inside the plastic covering. im guessing its a simple enough fix (i hope!!) ill get the spanners out and give it a go. i just want to go back out on it as its so sunny but i dont think ill tempt fate untill i get it sorted.

cheers, deej

tank off, airbox off, unclip the cables and give em a pull, i'd imagine the 1 cable will be sticky and the other will pull out lol. about £16 each new from cradley if i remember right.

The way to deal with a jammed open throttle is to hiit the kill switch and lift the clutch and coast/brake to a halt.........you then investigate the problem and fix it. If need be push the bike home or have it lifted by van or trailer.........................

I ask myself what sort of idiot tries to pull out into a junction in full knowledge that he has a throttle stuck wide open and does this person have a brain.............. the local coroner will soon find out

:ffs and if you cant fix the problem and/or have it lifted by van or trailer? i took every precaution and made sure i didnt make myself vulnerable to any other road users or become a nuisance to them. in my original post i stated i was at the end of my own street but if you had the slightest idea of where i live or more importantly the street i live on you would realise that it would take a worlds strongest man contestant to push it up the steep hill to my house and as i live a few miles outside a quiet village there was very little chance of any help. not trying to be funny, i merely asked for mechanical advice. ive been riding bikes long enough to know not to take any unnecessary risks.

imo, one cable is plenty. Keep it in good condition and route it correctly then it wont give you problems. The carbs are well sprung so it wont stick open, if it does snap then the carbs will close. If a return cable snaps it may snag and the carbs wont close... thats how i see it anyhow :smt002

check the cable/s. if there snapped/dammaged spend some money and get a nice teleflex cable for it :smt002

LOL - For the record I once rode a tzr250 with a jammed open throttle about 100 miles on the kill switch. THAT was FUN when the powervalve opened at 7k!! Still alive tho LOL. Been riding now for 23 years, dont own a car, all weathers, all bikes. A little risk makes the world go round.

Easy buddy! Its actually way easier than you'd think apart from controlling the wheelies from a standstill. Mind you this is a zxr400 we're talking about...wheelie?? dont think so. the trick in the corners where its trying to push the front is to leave the revs low (5-6th gear) and balance the bike with the rear brake and ffs dont hit the kill switch mid corner!

musta been backfiring like a bugger tho! with all that unburnt fuel straight out the exaust valve?

Keep it mental dude.
