After all the issues with the bike I've had a few weeks problem free riding, then...... pull up to a mini roundabout and it dies under low revs.. it starts ok then the same happens again, it takes a bit more starting then I rant it for 40 miles going nice stop and it starts again fine. Went to go out last night it starts first time then as I pull in to the petrol station it dies.... I start it again turn off then fill with fuel (yes it's the right stuff and not that low to start with). Ride round to the air machine it dies and won't start. I tried til the battery was nearly flat.

I pushed it up the biggest giraffe hill, tried to bump it and nothing until I gave it full choke and it sparked into life then it took work to keep it giong and it died as soon as it wasn't getting a fist full.

I'm not best pleased.

sounds like carb icing. But doubt its that.

Have you checked the carbs over? I forget what work you have done recently.

Yeah I have had A LOT of time spent on the carbs with new inlet rubbers compleatly cleaned and gone through. It was running so sweet. They also have carb heaters and it was very warm last night.

I'll charge the battery up and check the spark, change fuel filter etc. Fuel pump poss? How can I check if it's working?

Ahh, yeah fuel pump is a possibility, check the filter too make sure its clean. I looked at testing my pump the other day when mine was giving me problems, you can test it but you need a pressure meter to test the pump according to the manual.

Mine kept dying low down, in fact it was barely running below 2-3k and that turned out to be the plugs. How do they look.

Well, Just put the battery back in and tried to give it a couple of turns - no joy. I undid the drainage screws on the bottom of the bowls and the carbs are bone dry. Felt the fuel pumb and it was hotter than the sun! I took the pipe of the pump the pumps out turned it over and it's pumping nothing out.

Who thinks it can be a knackered pump?

To be sure connect 12V to the pump directly. If it works then check the pump relay. If it doesnt then its more than likely the pump.

sounds like relay is borked. but could be the pump or the relay tbh.

is the relay on the back of the pump?

no its a seperate unit, got a feeling its sat next to the indicator relay

I had a look the that and the relay on the bike looks brand new thr trouble is with out the special tools I can't check either the relay or the pump.

I suppose there is only one thing to do and that's get both and replace?

go and buy a multimeter for 10 quid at maplins. It sounds more like the pump than anything else especially with it getting quite hot. You can test the pump at least with sticking 12v across it. If it still doesnt chuck anything out then you know its the pump and not the relay.

first off, definitely fuel starvation. I had problems with this a while back, resulting in a late night trip back up the M1 in the back of a van.

Mine was resolved simply by changing the fuel filter (I replaced all the hose as well at the same time). Filter was 99p from a car parts place. It's also properly clear rather than the translucent white of the original, so you can just about see the fuel level in it when everything is on the bike by peering between the tank and frame.

If your pump is getting hot it sounds like there's something wrong there, although it could be the result of it running dry for a long period rather than the cause - the fuel passing through will cool the pump. Either way it could be knackered now - I think mine sounds a bit louder than it used to, but I'm not sure if I'm imagining it.

Change the filter first, as a cheap fix. If it doesn't work then worry about the pump.

connect the pump straight to the battery and see if it starts ticking ..

they have a thermal cut out, so it could well be that the pump is fine, but its got hot and switched off because it cant get any fuel, in which case its a blocked fuel pipe/filter/tap/breather as has been said.

afaik nearly all 90's kwak's run the same pump, so second-hand ones are cheap and easy to find.. i had one off a ZZR1100 on my first zxr.

There is deffinately fuel coming out the tank so the taps ok. I got a pum and relay for £25 and got a new filter. So when they arrive and I post with the outcome!
