k reg zxr400 wont start backfires

hi just got a non running zxr400 on a k reg was told it ran a bit rough up until ahole in exhaust was patched up. when i turn engine over it just backfires now and again, i have added fresh fuel and there is good spark at the plugs, fuel pump works ok wot could it be the carbs i was thinking or could it be the cdi thanks paul

drain the carbs, wait 5mins, give it a 1/3rd choke no throttle hit the starter.

before i got the lump tuned and sorted a few niggles out i did
Also, turn the lights off if you can.
Gives the starter motor a bit more punch.

may also be fouled plugs, so may be worth whipping them out and giving them a clean and resetting the gaps

drained the carbs cleaned plugs still no luck just backfiring and the odd flame from exhaust and carbs

In that case get those plugs out and clean them up. They are more then likely soaked in fuel now, so a good clean and heating with a blow torch or the hob if you have a gas one.

cleaned plugs with wire brush /emery cloth sparks good now, i was thinking could head gasket have gone and engine be losing compression has anyone had this happen or could ignition timing of moved somehow i am in lancaster thanks
