being as your online, what do you recommend for a zxr400?

23k miles, road use mainly but will get thrashed

bear in mind these dont seem to like fully synthetic.

cheers

fully synth seems to mess with the clutches from others past experience.

Its all about the correct addatives, particularly the correct friction modifiers and any fully synthetic worth its salt will have these and be fine.

The fact is sythetics are superior and if your bike is tuned, tracked or ridden hard then they ARE without doubt the way to go.

I have heard cases of people using fully synthetic car oils (which incidentally DO NOT in the main contain the correct friction modifiers to be used in wet clutches) but in the main this does not apply when using good quality dedicated bike oils.

The recommended grade for this bike is 10w-40 and that is what I would use unless the bike is very modded or seeing extremely high temps on track where a heavier grade may be adviseable. You could also use a 5w-40 which would give the same hot protection but better cold crank flow and therefore less engine wear during that vital cold start period.

As for the synthetic argument, certainly in a highly tuned scenario I would recommend no less but in a road bike that is unmodified a semi-synthetic will suffice if regular oil changes are made to ensure no breakdown of the oil.

Cheers

My fully synth castrol R4 gives me consistent clutch slip.

I use R4 (now changed to R1 i belive?) in my ZXR750, also used it in my 400 without ever getting clutch slip.

Got a ZXR750L1, 33,000 miles, lightly tunned engine used for fast road riding and track days, currently using Castrol R4 but it comes out black and horrid looking after a 2,000 odd miles? any recomendations? This is about the 8th oil change i've done on this bike and it always comes out looking like crap?

Try a better quality synthetic, somehting like the Silkolene Pro 4 or the Motul 300v.

Cheers

Guy.

I've used Mobil racing 4T fully syn with great success.
The only clutch slipping problems came when I changed the oil in an engine that had a semi or mineral oil in and I used Mobil 4T to refill.
So now if I'm replacing the oil in an engine I've not previously had the 4T in I change the clutch plate too.

4T is brilliant I've done a whole seasons racing on the same oil and it still comes out a golden colour. Never done a bearing either in 8 years of racing ZXRs
