Info on restriction please :)

Hi there,
I'm taking my test (at long last!!) on Wednesday. My aim was to do it on the schools 500, but the weight was too much for me to move in and out of the parking bays for module 1. I already have a lovely ZXR400 (in pink i may add ) waiting for me, which obviously will need to be restricted. I have a 1992 import. Is it easy enough to restrict these if you buy a kit and do it yourself? My hubby is pretty good at mechanical stuff. I found a restrictor kit on eBay for just over £40, which includes the certificate for insurance/police if I should require it. Other than that, the only garage around is quoting £232 for kit and labour, which after having to pay for my test is a lot of money but i'm eager to get on the road!!
Also, will restricting the bike affect the handling at all? I've heard some reports that restricted bikes are not very nice and enjoyable to ride and can be quite dangerous. I'm guessing this depends on which bike tho?!?!
Any help from anyone would be great
Thanks
