Faulty oil light or dodgy engine...

Basically when refitting my water pump i severed the black nd red wire that is the oil light :wanker
I patched it back together with some electrical wire and now the oil light won't turn off? Theres plenty of oil in there i'm just worried its not getting around.....When i stopped to fill up last night there seemed to be more oil than usual behind the sightglass when i stood the bike up...
The bike is running at normal temperatures and i wasn't worried until last night when i was riding back in the pissing rain (leather dye is soaked out and my leg is now red) When the revs got above about 8k it was as if one cylinder cut out...was only intermittend but was pretty strange....It also died at the of lights which is unusual, which i think may have been do to a cylinder cutting out.

make sure when you 'patched' the wiring up with electrical tape none of the bare wires are touching each other.this could cause the light to stay on.
as for the cutting out and running problems could these just have been related to the rain??? or a different problem, i would be suprised if the oil light would cause a running problem as im lead to believe (correct me if im wrong people) that the oil light is purely a level light not a pressure light?

Oil switch is "pressure" not "level" switch. Hence oil light should come on with the ignition but will immediately trip when the engine fires as the oil pump creates pressure which then "breaks" the circuit. Is it possilbe that the switch is permanently on? Did switch work immediatley before the lead was cut or is it some time (engine rebuild etc) since the switch last worked.
Sounds like the switch could be faulty
If in real doubt about the oil pump it is pretty straightforward to do an oil pressure test (or have one done) - see the manual for details

Well now you come to mention it davw the light did decide to come on a few days before i broke the wire. i assumed it was due to water being pumped into the crankcase (dodgy water pump, fitted a new one) but maybe the switch/pump is knakerd.
If the oil pump was knakerd i assume the engines health would deterioate very quickly....
I have ridden between leeds and hull several times with this light on....will i come to regret this soon? lol
I rode all through winter with no problems caused by rain and i couldn't really think of any problems rain could cause the engine all of a sudden...

wrong way of thinking

the winter riding could quite easily be taking its toll on your bike now. water in fuel tank,dodgy coil,ht lead breaking down, plug's' fouling up. does it do this on res tank or even when fuel tap is in the 'on' pos?
