Removing ignition barrel

Hi,

My bike has been stripped and due for a rebuild. I'm getting the yokes along with the other bits and pieces powder coated.

My question is how can I remove the ignition barrel from the top yoke without destroying it. I understand it has a security bolt/fastener.

Thanks!

You need to drop the steering stem out of the headstock first, then you can remove the top yoke. Once removed you can remove the barrel from the yoke - although the bolts used have unconventional heads.

If you look at this thread here viewtopic.php?f=123&t=13194 it shows you how to get the top yoke off for greasing headstock bearings. So that will do for your purposes.

Hi Tirpitz,

Thanks for your reply. The yoke has already been removed. I see the bolt and yes they look pretty weird to me, much like rivets.

I can't seem to find a way to remove the barrel without essentially using brute force and destroying it. How did you manage to undo that bolt?

Thanks.

I shall destroy them then. Thanks cargo!

How did you get on with drilling these bolts out? I'm planning on doing the same.

It's a little tricky to get it on a bench thanks to the shape.

But once you get the drill bit centered, just drill away the head of the rivet/screw. Get both sides out and replace with an allen caphead screw.
