Hi there all, im doing a front end swap, but a bit stuck on removing the steering stem from the zxr400 h1 bottom yoke. is there anyone on here that has actualy removed one? i know most are pressed in, is this one as it seems sooooo stuck. also is it a press from bottom of the stem up out of the yoke or down through the bottom? any 1???

I've never heard of anyone trying to do this...............

What exactly is it you are trying to do ?

im putting zxr forks onto a streetfighter project, for which i need to fit a different size stem into the yokes.

Will the new stem not be the wrong size to press fit to the ZXR yoke ?

Or it it the length that is different.

I'll take a look at one and see what I think with regards to removing the stem.................in the morning

Someone has done this to there h model. They put L yokes onto H stem to use 6r forks.
I cant remember who it was tho, im sure they where on here... might be a long search, but you might find something in there?

i would have thought the stem would be pushed up from the bottom, so to get it out you would have to knock it back down through the bottom, surely this would make sense if you think about how it tightens up at the top, otherwise there would be a chance of it just coming out of the bottom yoke, this is my theory anyway if anyone can understand what im trying to explain, also how about a bit of heat to try and free it?

t'other way around mate i think.
the 6r forks fit L yokes, H yoke are waisted different i think and dont work.
And the L stem aint long enough to work with the H headstock..

LOL, yes it will be the wrong width also, but i will be latheing the yokes out to fit. the problem is just getting the old stem out, its a cbr street fighter so dont know if much of you would be intrested this being a kwaka site, but u guys are sure more likely to know than me, ive done this sort of thing before, just not with zxr stem/yokes. i understand what you say about in theory it should be pushed down, but this is not the case on some makes/models, which is why im very weary of forcing it before i know.

there may be a springl clip holding it in and yes they are pressed in from both directions, not sure on the zxr from the top i think, don't forget it could be corroded in place, did this on gpz/gixer stem swap for a mate and what a bugger it was to get the old stem out!!

incidentally, I think i'm right in saying that the H2 stem is the same length as the H1, but larger diameter... perhaps starting with H2 yokes would preclude changing the stem ?

Had a look at an L yoke/stem I'd say it presses in from above.

A bit of heat might help

I'll give it another look this evening, I'll post the results if i get any progress just so you all know for future reference!

done it! at last! yes it pushed down! seeing as it was the bottom yoke i needed i choped the stem down close to yoke, then used a hacksaw blade thru the stem to cut it inside the yoke, this allowed me to just push it down and out. and there was a lip on it with a ring pin round it you were right. cheers for the help guys and i hope this can help anyone else at sum point.!

iv done this,i used a grinder to remove the bottom yoke,just cut it into bits,its perfectly normal,then i put the stem in a new lower yoke and a new top triple,new forks on the zxr.quite simple
