Calipers / Lines

Took my calipers off the bike yesterday to have a lookski (Bled them, no air and still shite)
To my horrow I found one of the 'piston' cork like bits, was HALF MISSING
Is this a problem?
Also, most steel lines seem to go directly from the MC to the caliper, missing out the splitter. Is this a good idea?
Think the calipers are screwed to be honest, the pistons dont return easy, don't come out together, and don't come out at the same pace...
Best advice to move forward? I want my 1 finger braking back

Also,
Whats the difference between £23 lines and £60 lines, other than price and brand?

the £60 lines will probably have s/s banjos, the cheaper ones won't, so they will rust

Message confirmation from the gent himself:

Cheers Ian
They should be here middle of next week, so will take piccies etc to confirm

Update:
The lines have arrived, and seem to be of great quality.
They have HEL rubber 'Bands' around the edges, and are in a 'Cobra Performance' case.
In the 'manual' included, it clearly states that these are HEL performance lines made under licence!
BARGAIN!
