Loud Rattling on idling

Hey guys,
just looking for any ideas before I go spend yet more money at the garage. Basically I rode to work last night fine. Come to start it up to come home and horrible rattle coming from the bike when idling. To me it sounded near the exhaust down pipes possibly but I'm not sure. Anyway I ride it home and seems to disappear, cant here anything whilst riding. Get back home and rattle gone. Start the bike up again to put it in the garage and its there again really loud, sounds like its to do with it vibrating or something. I don't think it can be the cam chain because it's just been tensioned. Once I take the bike over 4/5 rpm it seems to disappear. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers

Sounds like a worn clutch basket mate. Mine does it too, but it doesnt at higher revs. Does the noise stop when you pull the clutch in?

A big alarm just rang in my head.................................
You say your cam chain has " just been tensioned "
What exactly do you mean by that ?
Or let me put it another way the cam chain tensioner on a ZXR400 is automatic..........................................

Cheers guys for fast response. Im only 17 and no jack all about bikes to be fair. I've since had Dad come and have a listen. Erm he pretty sure its cam chain. By tensioned I'm not entirely sure, I read they were automatic as well, but basically he said that the actual tensioner itself was stuck on a cog and need feeding onto the next bit like, basically, sorry I'm not very clued up. This rattle sounds awful and is extremely loud, would i risk ruining the bike if I rode it to the garage who always looks at it for me, bearing in mind its over 30 miles away. I'm really stuck as to what to do, there isn't really any other way of me getting the bike to the garage. Many thanks for replies

ok make of this what you will I'm not able to help because your too far away..........................
ZXR 400 cam chain tensioners are automatic they do NOT need to be manually adjusted in normal use.
However if you undo the bolts retaining it than it is likely that it will need to be reset this isn't a hard job but it needs done properly...............
I'm not saying that it's the cam chain that is making the noise but you need to be aware that it might be and that the tensioner could need to be reset it is also possible that if you did undo or remove the cam chain tensioner you may have damaged it when putting it back if you did not follow the correct procedure....................
Now this really is just specualtion because you not given me the full story...................... and your rattle could well be the normal ZXR 400 clucth rattle that nearly every bike has.
Was the noise there before you or your dad "tensioned" the cam chain ?
Did the noise only appear after you or your dad did this ?
If you lived next door I could do this in 10 minutes..............sorry

Neither me or Dad have tensioned it, this was a garage who did as I felt it was getting noisy. I had taken the bike in to have the chain and tensioner looked at approximately 2 weeks ago. It sounded a bit rough at 6,000 rpm thats why I had taken it in. All had been running fine since the tensioner had been looked at and sounded a lot healthier around the 6,000 rpm mark. However literally last night when I came to start it up after work, the bike sounded terrible. The road to work is incredibly bumpy and with a really hard suspension don't know if that caused anything to come lose. It's not just a clutch rattle this sound is as loud as my exhaust its horrendous you really cant fail to miss it, I'm almost certain its nothing to do with clutch. Any suggestions as to what I can do? Many thanks for your help btw

Ok best I can do is suggest that you try and find someone who knows about ZXR400s to come and look and listen.................given your description of the noise I'd say you should NOT be riding the bike you could be doing even more damage.
I wish I could be more helpful but as I say your a bit far away...................
Anyone near this guy that could help ????

if its loud loud, it could be the headers not seated right? i know its probs unlikely that they have come loose on them bumpy roads...but i have had this and it does actually sound like a camchain rattle at first listen...but louder!
If i was better before it went into that garage, and now its worse....id be on the phone to them.Bugger that its xmas..bad timing
