Odd tinkling sound!?

Hey guys,

you will have to excuse my thick questions, I really have no idea about bikes and just ride the dam thing. Could really do with some advice. I have seen other posts similar to this but as I'm 17 and on a tight budget need to try and get diagnosis right before splash out. Over last few weeks bike has developed a kind of ticking sound. This is noticeable when bike stationary and idling. However when I ride this ticking is no more and instead I can here a tinkling sound (sorry to be pedantic but no longer ticking bike is tinkling if ya get me lol). When I pull the clutch in sound continues to be there. Its not particularly loud just noticeable when I pull clutch in coast and listen to it. It doesn't get any worse when I am riding at higher revs. Is this a possible cam chain replacement as I have read in other posts? I'm really hoping not :( I have recently had a new chain and sprockets fitted could the tinkling sound becoming from there more likely? Any ideas would be much appreciated, being 17 and at college doesn't really leave me with much spare cash :)

Cheers all

ZXR's are noisey bikes anyway, is it a new sound since you've owned it? How does it run? Likely to be cam chain, whats the mileage?

sounds like the cam chain or valve clearances, i believe a new cam chain is about £20 ish.

Nah i wish lol, tis an L3 and has done approx 28 K off top of my head, the bike in my opinion does run well apart from the odd other sounds, is it something I should be worried about and replace now? The only other thing which concerns me is the slight (its hard to explain) wheezing sound as I release the accelerator and its slowing down after coming down from about 12,000 rpm (prob just me over worrying). So your thinking cam chain? I really dont have a clue about bikes so please excuse my ignorance, should the sound disappear when engine disengaged and clutch in if it were the cam chain (sorry must be a stupid question). Thanks for quick reply

if its the cam chain then the noise will always be there when the engines running, it wont make any difference if you pull the clutch lever.

ticking sounds like a worn cam follower (tappet) tinkling could be chain and sprockets .. adjust and lube them and see what happens..

if the ticking is a worn follower or excessive valve clearance for any reason, it should be done sooner rather than later.

best hope is that one of the header pipes is loose or holed.. .. got OE rust-o-matic exhaust on there ? this can cause a ticking noise ..so can an HT lead that has broken down and which is arcing to the head instead of firing the plug.
