recently my zxr has developed a slight ticking sound which gets faster as the revs get higher and its got slightly noisier recently, i get it when reving the bike when stationary etc sorry i cant really explain it. but do you guys have any suggestions as to what it could be?

It will either be the valve clearance or the cam chain. Can you hear it while riding the bike?

yea can hear it when riding, more so than when stationary. expensive to repair im guessing?

depends on whether you are paying someone to do it, ..

parts are cheap, labour isnt.

will probably do it myself with some assistance, whats the best way of checking whats wrong dont really want to have to take it all apart as i use my bike as daily commute bike

sorry, its a case of taking it apart ..

tank off
carbs off
(i remove the coils too to give more room to work in)
cam cover off
ignition cover off
check condition of cams
check valve clearances
check cam timing (if you cant line up the marks on the rotor/cam sprockets EXACTLY, or the tensioner is almost fully extended, change the chain)

if its a follower, you'll have one valve clearance thats miles different to the others .. be worth pulling the cams out to have a good look at them really as the clearances can be misleading if the worn section is a narrow enough groove for the feeler gauge to span it.

if its an exhaust side follower, i think it can be done without removing the engine, not sure on inlet. Undo the shaft they sit on and extract it making sure nothing falls into the engine, replace worn one, and put it back together then re-do the valve clearances.


On the other hand .. it could just be a hole in the exhaust right next to the head, or even just a loose header pipe that needs nipping up.

ohh a big job then bikes starting to get expensive!!!

i called for a quote and they said aswell as the chain did i want the Tensioner body and the blades etc anyone know whats required to change the cam chain?

im going to try take the tank off/side off the bike to see whats what this weekend i think
