Hi All, just registered with your site... very impressed !
I Need Help....!
On Saturday past I went to pick up a 2000 zxr400 L9 Race/Track Bike in Scotland which we bought on ebay. As you can imagine the cost was slightly higher for us travelling from Belfast ( boat/diesel £385 ) bike £795.
When I heard the bike running I new it wasn't right... sounded like a cylinder down, bit of camchain noise but not excessive. When I rode it, it was spluttering and had to rev it to about 6000 to clear itself and get going...
We didn't want to have a wasted journey so managed to get £195 knocked off for our troubles
Took the engine out last night and immediately new what was up...

1. All cam lobes pitted on both camshafts
2. Camshaft caps had a piece broken off at camchain end, obviously affecting oil flow
3. Rocker Arms would appear worn

Couple of Questions......
Would anyone have a good Cylinder Head with matching Camshaft Caps and/or good camshafts for sale ?

Can somebody tell me where the engine number should be.. I've had Kawasaki's all my life and it's always located just above the clutch housing ? Have my doubts as to whether it's the matching engine

Can you fit H Model Cylinder Head and /or Camshafts to L Model engines ?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated... Cheers

Welcome to the forum. :smt001

Check out the classifieds, you can post a wanted post for parts you need.

the engine number iirc can be found on the front of the engine just above the oil filter.

As for head interchangeability im sure someone will be along soon to tell you yes or no, but my feeling is that they are.

heads are all the same casting, so any good head will go on, the snapped bit smacks of clumsy assembly, ive seen it before on two engines, and there's no way it can snap in use.. so i'd be checking everything else too.

i cant help with a head/cam caps, but i've got a couple of sets of cams,(H model i think) pm me and im sure we can sort something out.

Thanks for the info yesterday... Engine no has been removed and the conrods are marked 1178...
Must be an H Model....
Makes you mad when you feel like you've been conned......!

no worries..

rod's in my spare H1 engine are 1151, i think 1178 is early L, its no big deal really

if i was building an engine for the track and not going to the lengths of lightening/balancing the internals i'd start with a pre L9 engine anyway as the crank's a bit lighter :) and zxr's arent known for having weak conrods (like fzr's) anyway.

the bike may well be an L9, but had a replacement engine.. ?

having said that i'd be pissed too in your position.

Maybe there's light at the end of the tunnel yet.....!
I'll check the nos again this evening, I'm almost 99% sure it read 1178 but you have me doubting
myself now you mentioned 1173 ... :smt017
Cheers Buddy... :
