im just going to replace my camchain and head gasket, do i need to replace the tensioner too, or can i reset it?

the tensioner is automatic, you push the rod back in (its spring loaded) and hold it in with a bit of wire while you put it back in the engine, you may need to replace the cam chain guides tho.

another question,

how do i get the chain around the crank? will i have to split it or will there be enough slack to get it onto the crank and then through the block to the cams?

take the cover off the generator on the left of the engine and rock the engine back and forth by hand while easing the chain off the crank sprocket, its tight, but it can be done.

if its an OEM chain then it will be continuous and the myth is you're supposed to split the engine to change it but we all know it can be done without splitting the engine, there is a bit of metal that can be ground out to ease changing the chain, i will try and get a pic and post up.

yeah there's an oem chain on there, and an oem one going on

theroetically i could just split the chain and rivet it back together yeah?

also, as im replacing head gasket, so do you mean splitting the block there? as in just taking the top end off, or splitting the bottom end?

split the lot but not the chain, think i'd rather split the engine than the chain.

unless you have the other type of cam chain tensioner, in which case you get confused trying to work out where to put the bit of wire

the one shown in the manual, and the one thats actually on the bike?

sorry not had chance to look at the engine i've got but if you search through this section of the forum you will see it has been discussed many times as per here viewtopic.php?f=7&t=2759

precisely.

there's a post from me somewhere explaining how to reset it, but basically you take the springs out of the bottom, bolt the body back up to the engine, then put the springs back in after.

if you look in the different models thread that RobB posted zimm mentions there are 3 or 4 different tensioners.
