Alternator / Stator problem

Hi guys,
I've got a ZXR400 L3 model, I was having problems with it not charging having checked one of the phases on the stator I decided this was the problem as one out of three showed no reading whatsoever.
I've replaced the stator, put new gasket on wired the whole thing back up and started the bike....
check the phases and I'm getting absolutely nothing from the stator! and as such the bike isn't charging..... (weird I thought)
so I disconnected everything from the alternator and started the bike up on a brand new battery, Check the stator which seems to be producing all of 1.2volts AC (obviously not normal) but what has concerned me more is the alternator cover seems to get exceedingly hot so I opened it up and checked the alternator for any obviously signs of friction without anything,
I even checked the stator for resistance and at 200ohms on the mulimeter, it gives me a reading of about 1.2 per phase and there is no continuity with earth. The stator seems to be at fault so i'm sending that back but can anyone help me with the heat being generated after 3 minutes of running? it's about 20-30c or if there any way of testing the alternator rotor for movement without taking the engine apart and blowing myself up.
