Same problem here on an 98 model :smt013
I've heard its to do with ball bearings in the gear box that are meant to move out of the way with centrifugal force when the bike is moving but sometimes stick in thier slot not allowing the 2nd gear to be selected.
Complete pain in the butt, but being a lazy twat, I've done naff all about it yet
Course , I could be wrong

Have any of you tried taking off the gear lever and giving it a good clean and regrease?

no one's said it yet....
Be more positive with your upshifts
and try positioning the lever further down so you only need to pull with your toes and thus getting a full lever movement, my mate complained about a similiar problem on his bandit till i pointed out that the previous owner had much larger feet and he hadnt adjusted it for a smaller foot movement.

i always positioned my gear lever further down as i was always shifting down when i moved my foot over the top :smt013
why dont u reverse your box like the racers do? 1 up and 5 down???

Hehe i tried that before, was very strange.. at the first junction i knocked it up two gears, corrected it before pulling away but then while tryin to accelerate into traffic i was trying to upshift from 1st to 1st. Couldnt be bothered to pursevere with it so i reset it.

sometimes it helps to slightly adjust the linkage.
