cam chain tensioner design

hi guys
i was taking out my cam tensioner for inspection if anything was wrong with it cos of the slak chain noise
i have an l4 model after a closer look i noticed that when the tensioner adjusts the slak of the chain after
getting to certain height the rod would rest on the internal engin casting where the push rod goes throught
is this correct? is this a simple thing to stop the chain being tightened over the limit or a flaw in the design ?
cheers

It's designed that way. From what i see on mine I've got about 1.5mm left before it fully extends which i reckon is about 2 more clicks on the ratchet.

Nonetheless, you'll know when it's time to change when your engine sounds like it's got a bag of screws.

Cheers!

A fully extended tensioner could also be an indication of a broken tensioner blade..................see loads of em done a fair few myself

Hope you put it back correctly ?
