Engine smoking!

Hi all!
Just picked up a L5 model with a a couple of problems!
The lad i bought it of said it was running fine before hand, he left the petrol station and the bike lost power and a cloud of smoke came from the exhaust!
It starts now and again but runs prretty rough, dont wanna keep trying it as there is not much oil in the engine.
Plenty of smoke coming from the exhaust when it does run, and what i think is oil residue in the end of the exhaust can.
I cant hear any strange noises when its running but like i said runs pretty rough!
Got a feeling it could be buggered piston rings!
Could anyone offer any ideas or advice?
Thanks!

Hey GB,
Blue smoke is oil burning and you should be able to smell it.
Whitish smoke more likely coolant being burnt off.
Dark smoke, rich fuelling.
Either way - off with its head !

Hi..
Thanks for the imput guys!
Yeah it definatly smells like oil burning cant really tell the colour!
Also noticed some smoke coming out from the engine area from the side of the fairings.
Just out of interest CaNsA why say i shouldnt of bought it? I was after a project bike I,m a qualified mechanic but never worked on a bike before i will be honest.
And i paid £400 for it, The rest of the bike looks tidy no cracked fairings and all that!
Just going to download the relavent manuals and take my time! No rush..
Thanks!

I think you do need glasses and you should have worn them when you went to buy the bike

Answers = no and yes
It's a scouse initiation thing. If you stand up to him he goes all cuddly and becomes a very nice chap. But if he senses weakness you'd better get outta here...........

Last time I seen this happen it was the best buy of my life. The retard filled the bike with diesel and thought he blew the engine. I bought it for the suspension and spare paprts but after I pored the his tank of gas into my street bike, I thought I blew my bike up. I called the guy and he pulled his petrol slip and low and behold he had purchased diesel.
I thanked him again. Drained both bikes and eventually had a spare race bike instead of just parts.......just say'n
