Cams and Caps

Hello,

I have two engines which I have stripped and since rebuilt one as the crank shaft was knackered on one. I have mixed up the cams and caps though and now, on start up it makes a hell of a rattle when the engine is running. Although it starts on the button. :smt017

I have since taken the head off (as I thought maybe I have dropped a washer in the spark plug hole) and rebuilt back up to re-installing the cams. One exhaust cam has M1 and the other has M2 is there a difference? :smt017

Also is there a way of being able to check which caps go with which cams with out going through the numerous combinations of caps, cams and rebuilds?

What a dumbass I am! :smt013

im pretty sure cam caps are machined to the head so each cam cap must go back to its original place....otherwise you could be into problems wearing the cams etc
what sort of rattle?have you done valve clearances?does it go with clutch pulled in?cam chain and guides all ok?

The only way to check is to use plastiguage (compressable fealer guage) and assemble both heads.

The clearance is in the workshop manual , ones that turn out to be correct leave then start swapping the others about - no easy solution.

If not done and clearance is to big you run the chance of twisting cams at high speed or a total top end destruction !!

To tight isn't so bad as they caps will get worn to spec but still not ideal.

There can only be two options as the caps are numbered/marked
