Hi all,

Just a thread for abit of chit chat, Basically do you make plans to improve or modify your bike mine are as follows:-

Sort brakes - Nearly done
New end can maybe whole system
Bike set up on dyno for above change and to ensure its fuelling right anyway
ENJOY IT FOR A WHILE!!!!
Then strip it down and rebuild with powdercoated parts and refurbished wheel's and basically make it look like new probably going for a near enough std look to it as H models are only going to get rarer.
ENJOY IT SOME MORE!!!
Then probabaly buy a new bike but keep this one

Well thats my plan aslong as I can afford it so could take a couple years I suppose, so whats your plan?

got plans to re-incarnate the bike, after a harsh winter about 90% the bike has stood up to it, but that 5% needs some attention, so got plans to strip it right back and start over, replacing anything that went rusty with stainless. That was the originall intention when doing the bike up but it slowly got lost with the excitement of getting it back on the road.

First things first tho, need another bike as a replacement.

Dont you have a 7R aswell or have you got plans for that aswell, your bike looks really good in the photo's I've seen, when I bought my bike it was a non-runner and I intended to get it near perfect before putting it on the road but I suffered the same problem and just wanted to ride it and ended up only doing whats needed. Actually all my recent bikes have been bargain basement bikes that have caused me problems I think next time I'm going to try to get something that I know has been looked after well even if it means paying more.

I also would like a second bike just a hack really so I could get ZXR done may look into it come autumn if cash flow is better. By any chance have you changed front discs on a bike before, is there anything I should be aware of a few people have told me the bolts are prone to shearing but im hoping its just scaremongering!

I sold the 7R about a year ago. Bike still is fairly nice, just has some rough edges that i want to smooth off :) Like rusty bolts, a proper paint job and a good engine service.

Ahh that explains the need for another bike then, by the sounds of it your plans should finish the bike off a treat!

My plans for the immediate fute are to get the jetting right! I'm still getting spluttering/ bad performance on full throttle, i'm doing a track day soon and want to get it running as good as I can get.

After realising i still cant change gear properly at brands earlier this year i've put racing on hold till next year though i might do a few track days later this year if the bikes are ready.

I did have a H and an L race bike, the H is currently being stripped as the engine is sweet and i'll save that to build up another L bike.

I'd like

dymags for one bike
radial master cylinder for both bikes
ram air for both bikes
both will have one off subframes
both will have small fuel tanks under a fake fuel tank cover
one bike will be stock engine
one will be tuned
ap small rear caliper on both bikes
Ti Nitride forks

i'm using at moment gsxr rear shocks that have been revalved but i might upgrade to maxton shocks if i dont get the feeling i want

depending whether i can get money together for my own kit or a few cheeky saturday mornings at work i'd like to do a few billet 'one off' items on the milling machine and lathe.

Neither will probably look that much like a zxr400 but i'm going for light weight and function over appearance.

How much of the above gets done will depend on finances but i've got a few friends willing to help with ally welding etc...

Sounds like a nice spec, what sort of cost are you looking at?

Apart from the dymags i have all the parts for one bike and some for another which i'm building at the moment. Dymags are probably largest cost.

I figure about 5k all in for both bikes. I used to race supermoto and a basic bike was 5k so this is pretty cheap

Do Dymags make a big difference and in what area, I believe its all about unsprung weight but not sure how it physically improves a bike's performance and is it only worth doing on a track bike/racer or would it benefit a road bike?

The wheel on a bike is basically a gyroscope, a spinning mass. If youve ever had a bicycle wheel in your hands and spun it, then tried to turn it youll notice it actually resists turning. The heavier the wheel is the greater this resistance, the lighter the wheel the easier it becomes to turn. The speed of the wheel turning also makes a difference, but for the same speed theheavier wheel will be more difficult to turn.

You also have the added benefit of less unsprung weight, which is the mass not suported by the suspension, hence the term unsprung. When the wheel moves upwards due to a bump, the wheel has inertia, and will continue to travel up the suspension and actually overshoot the height of the bump (if you get that?). Imagine someone hitting a punch bag and your behind it to push it back, the lighter the punchbag the easier it will be to push it back where it come form. And what that means is the wheel is actually not in contact with the tarmac for a time. With less weight means less inertia so the suspension is able to push the wheel back into the floor more easily.

You ll benefit on the road as in youll notice the difference, weather its worth it or not i dont know.
