Hi all,

Measured the front discs and they are just about up for replacement, the thing is the pads were changed about 1000miles ago so hardly used so do they really need to be changed? Its always said certainly within the car community that you do both together but it seems a waste of a good pads and money.

Id change them, if you have money to fork out for new disks then you must have it for pads too. The reason id change them is because the old pads will have worn to the shape of the old disks, stick them on with your new ones and you might end up ruining the surface of the new ones. Thats my logic anyway.

Unfortunately with the other recent problems with the bike and the pending MOTfor the car and a few other undesired expenses moneys tight for the next month or so, Oh well if it needs to be done it needs to be done.

i wouldn't, i change my pads when they need changing and discs when they need changing.

If you just change the discs you brakes will feel a bit weak while the pads bed into the news discs......................you could try giving the pads a rub with emery cloth to take off any high points that would speed the rebeding process.

I think it's best to change your pads with your disks if you can, for the reasons Cargo stated. I don't think it will actually damage them in any way if you leave the old pads on as long as you take your time to bed them in, and don't do this as you would with new pads!

So if you can't afford it, it's not essential. I've been on a very tight budget in the last few years and have used pads that came with old calipers I bought off Ebay many times with no problems. You may even want to ask some of the racers if you can have their old pads, because most tend to bin them when they've got loads of meat left on them. Not ideal - but helps a hell of a lot when you're on a budget.

Thanks for the help guys, I had decided that I would just change the discs and see if I was happy and only change the pads if I was'nt comfortable with the performance or feel.

The other thing is the discs I had resigned myself to buy some discs made by a company called kagizume or something off ebay but I have bought cheap discs for a car before and was not impressed so a liitle concerend about doing it again, I may try second hand discs from a reputable breaker maybe AMS what is people views on second hand discs?

I bought a set of rotors off ebay for my gixer and they were like new, only paid 99p for em. although postage was a tenner still a bargain.

Im keeping an eye out on ebay but they seem to be rare now which AMS has just confirmed as they dont have any or expect to see any soon, the bloke at AMS was helpful and stated that ZZR600 discs are the same which was helpful.

If you try a breaker you could always ask them if they'll throw the old pads in for free (providing they have them and know which went with which). If you don't ask you won't get!

Did you get the Kagizume discs?

I'm looking for a set myself, and a lot of people said they warp easily - but then Sandy Bike Spares on Ebay sell them with a 1 year unlimited mileage warrenty...

Yeah I got them, cant fault them myself and I also bought them from Sandy Bikes Spares and would recommend them for there service.

As for the warping I have not seen a problem with mine but I'm not hard on my brakes so may or may not explain it, overall i would recommend them though!

Just remember these are Chinese discs and not Japanese as the name would suggest. (Think it means throwing star)

Steel quality will be low and I view them as a , get through MOT / Sell the bike part.

1yr warranty's are easy to hand out when they are only £10 and you might only get a 10% claim from sales.

Like others have said, I don't replace disc's when I do the pads so wouldn't think to do the same the other way around unless the pads needed changing too (Uneven wear or low). However, if I was wanting to improve the braking and was spending top dosh on disc's I'd be fitting top dosh pads too.
