I know it depends on how you ride the bike, but on average, for an average rider, roughly how long does the clutch last on the zxr400? 30,000 , 40,000 miles? What are peoples experiences?

its an impossible question really, deepending on where you ride, how you ride (ie race starts, wheelies ect) what oil you use all effect the clutch life.

The good news is bike clutches take about an hour to replace if you havent dont it before and if you put top stuff in still only cost £100 with new driveplates friction plates and springs.

£86 and 20 mins to do on my old zxr750 and that was the first time i'd ever done one. how long they last?? how long is a piece of string.

Not to hi-jack your thread mate but, My clutch basket is on its way out ( noisey as you like ) Can you source these? or any tips, quick fixes.
My bike is 18 year old with 33thou and clutch basket is feeling its age, if that helps. God only knows how many times the plates and springs have been changed in its life.

They are all noisy being noisy is no way to tell if the basket is shot...............................you need to get a look see.

Second hand ones are on ebay all the time might even have one my self

the only way to tell if the basket is gone is to actually get in there and have a look at it! They all sound like a bag of nails!

Does anyone else's clutch sound really rough when rolling on the throttle at really low revs? (say below 2k) with the clutch fully out.

yeh.
I have my idle quite high at 3k odd, but if i drop it down to 2k or under it sounds worse than 'normal'
I dont think i have ever rolled the throttle on that low down before tho! i think mine would stall!

If your clutch is shot you can't mistake it. You'll open the throttle and the revs will rise but you won't accellerate!

This will most likely happen at high speeds first, in the top gears, and then as it gets worse it'll slip lower down the rev range in lower gears until you can't pull away!

If you do have to change your clutchplates REALLY have a crack at it yourself, though! You literally unbolt the casing, take out the old plates, slip the new ones in (making sure they're facing the right way), put the new gasket on the casing, bolt it all back up again and you're done. Err... you might want to drain the oil before you do that, too! One of the easiest jobs you can do and it'll give you loads of confidence and save you at least 50 squid.

If you do it with the bike on the side stand then it should be ok to leave the oil in

I've seen people at race meetings lay the bike down on some tyres and do that! Didn't think it was possible on the stand!

you'll need to lean it a little more than on the stand...

Whenever i change them i give it a minor serivce why im there, might as well really!

If the side stand doesn't lean it over enough then find a bit of ground that is lower than the wheels to park the stand on like a low kerb or a pot hole. Or lean it against a wall



Common sight to see a race bike tipped over to do this kind of job.

Mine is proper loud, it makes the most noise after the end can. Goes silent when clutch lever is pulled in
