Just got a MPH clock today

So out with tools and got it stripped

Because I'm building my bike from the ground up I am re-setting the clocks to zero, however the trick is not to set the tumblers to zero as you will find that the majority of them "float" about and when you start clocking up the miles they don't align right.

What you do or what i have done is set them to 99,999.5 miles , the 1st ride out I will cover at least a few miles so they will clock themselves back to zero - this mechanical movement should make them all sit OK

I have taken some photos to show how easy it is to dial in the tumblers, a cocktail stick and your sorted - getting the clock apart isn't so lol !

it will fail its MOT i belive for re-setting the clocks...

Id also never buy a bike that the old MOT's miles dont match the current reading, not to mention how illegal it is.

cant be illegal or fail the mot, surely is just the same as fitting brand new clocks

Clocking a vehical is illegal, i might be wrong about the MOT part as i've only been told that in pub talk. I think as long as you tell the new owner what the millage was before changing it then its ok other wise its fraud.

wont fail the MOT for it.... BUT the MOT certificates will show that the mileage doesnt add up - as long as you are honest with it, it shouldnt cause any problems.

BUT, saying a vehicle has only done 12,000 miles when infact it has done 112,000 miles is fraud and is illegal

Deliberately clocking your bike to pass it on under the guise of lower miles is illegal and fraud - bit feckin obvious but never mind!

However, re-setting your clocks ain't and as pointed out is no different than fitting a new set when say you have a front end smash and they get wrecked.

For selling purposes I would photo the clock on your bike with that day's newspaper clearly showing the date. Later when you sell and your being up front about what you done you can prove it.

MOT - no problem.

Why I am doing this is my bike is a new re-build and I want the clocks to reflect the miles that I have done on it and not somebody else.

If I ever do sell it the new owner will be made aware of what I done, but here's the thing:

A bike can be c#nted with a 1000 geniune miles on it and it can be within spec' with 250,000 miles on it. Never buy a bike because it has low miles on it - go by condition and wear then look to see what it has done !

I had a GT550 that had covered well over 300K miles and bores were still standard and I regularly saw 125MPH on the clock and three years after selling it it was still being used every day for commuting as it had been serviced as and when needed.

Quite true especially given the age of ZXR400 now and some of the very dodgy home bodges around.

so what happens when you get to 99,999 miles? do you have to buy a new clockset that shows more than 100,000 miles? my gixer had digi clocks that never recorded the mileage as do a lot of streetfighters never had any problem with mots, they usually leave it blank.

My ZX636 was twatted after 1200 miles, at cost of £2600 to my brother.
So I agree.
Clocks are nowt.
