For anyone wondering what a zxr400 is like restricted to 33

I did my test in july, got my zxr400 in august. I had a honda nsr125 before, and a piaggio nrg50 before that. Im only 17, so i had it restricted to 33bhp, by a garage, to the tune of £220. She bike has been dynojetted by the previous owner for the 'art' end can ( he claimed over 80bhp and a top of 156mph), so it wont be quite the same as a standard bike restricted, but with the restrictor in i find i get a top speed of around 120mph, she revvs up to about 10000rpm, and gets to 60 in less than 6 seconds. I have raced a full power aprilia rs125 off the line and wasted it, but i was beaten, only slightly, by a gpz500s. I find it is almost as fast as it was before up to about 70mph, but compared to before the restrictor, is very slow to pick up after that point. I've ridden with my uncle on his thundercat, and im still able to keep up through the twisties easily thanks to the amazing handling of the zxr, but he did shoot off on the straights. The worst thing about the restrictor, is that if you pull the throttle all the way back, the engine 'bogs down' and u just lose speed. I think this is partly due to the bike being up jetted, either way, its extremely annoying and disappointing when riding.

And for all this, i think the restrictors will be 'falling off' in the next few days. For anyone who wants to know, they are just a few over sized washers in the intake manifold.

Let me know if anyone else has a restricted zxr, or used to, so we can compared to one that hasn't been altered so much, or in a different way

mines restricted to 33bhp and I get 0-60 in abut 6 seconds too, top speed about 110mph though. However mine will rev up to 14000rpm comfortably. I also find that if you jerk the throttle really hard it will stutter a bit, but it doesnt really have that big an effect.

either way i think its plenty fast enough for a newb like me!

not sure what stage, i dont know much about it. I was trying to avoid the subject of performance when i was buying it coz my mum was there, and she didn't want me having ''one of them where u lean forward'' as she put it, but i got it anyway. I shall try to find out some more about it, ring up the last owner or something

80bhp is full race prep bike that needs rebuilding every few hours, your wont be.

It might be dyno jeted and a cheap art can on there, with those changes it might give you 2-3 bhp more and sound better.

dont think we are taking the piss mate

we all come a cropper at some stage or another when being sold something, unfortunately the seller took advantage of your naivity as a new rider.

but trust me, the 400 will put a smile on your face in 33bhp form, and in two years whip them restrictors out and enjoy the 60-65bhp on tap!

remember that power is not what the 400 is about, more for the cornering grin factor, which is what u need to grasp to become a good rider

er - highly unlikely. If you take that to 60bhp and a top speed of 136mph then you've got slightly more realistic numbers.

IMO, you dont buy a ZXR for top speed or power. What you do buy it for is a lightish bike with good handling. Because it doesnt have the power of a bigger bike, it teaches you to be a better rider - and thats what puts the grin on your face.

Enjoy the bike, ride safe, n keep grinning! :smt004

Mine's stock (except for a Micron can) and restricted.
I squeezed 115 out of her on the A303 down a grade yesterday, that's the highest so far.
As far as accelleration goes, I don't think it's the same through any part of the curve, as I rode her unrestricted for a couple of days, and you really can feel how much the washers are choking the power. And as for 0-60 I can't say I've timed it so I don't know with any degree of accuracy, but I think it's over six seconds, as it feels slower than the Rover, which is booktime'd at 7.2.

I doubted it would do 156mph when he said it, just telling you what he told me. If i wouldn't a fast bike as my first big bike, i'd have taken the thundercat my uncle offered me. I think 400 is a good engine size to start on, so i can move on up later. i have a friend who bought a 600 hornet, then wrote it off a few weeks later when he took the restrictors out, coz he pulled the throttle back too much out of a corner and lost the back end. Like you say, the zxr is great fun and will teach me how to ride fast, instead of relying on sheer power and straight line speed. It's still stupidly quick compared to the nsr i had anyway

i used to ride with a lad on a thundercat tbh it wont leave you for dead on the 400 once on the bends and once you've built up some skill you'll kill it.
