Hot Start

Well I supose it had to happen at some point, the 1st real hot start problem !! shocking

I've had it not catch before from the 1st push of the button but have had bikes in the past do that occasionally too.

But tonight it would had let me kill the battery before even contemplating to start :smt009

My only marked difference from other spins was i was reving the utter jublits off it - I didn't even know it had a rev limiter until tonight ! :smt005 I did hit this very often and in rapid succession :smt003

Just before stopping off at home I nipped into the supermarket to pick up some bits n pieces for tonights dinner and when i came out - no joy ! :smt010 It wasn't sitting high on the coolant temp either 80'c

After 10 mins of repeated effort to get it going I decided to just put my helmet in the lock and walk home - only 5 mins down the road.

Sat for well over an hour catching up on emails and started dinner too :smt016

Walked round to supermarket , helmet on, ignition on , press the button and vroom :excited

Will put battery on charge tomorrow as it took a pounding earlier and while I'm about it check the plugs too.

Need to pick Zimms brains to see if he has had any issues since swapping out for a programeable CDI - just wondering if the rev limiter circuit is the culprit to all this :smt017

Either that it was just well p!ssed from me roasting it's nutz :smt003

Not desperately annoyed by it all as it did start so nothing terminal :smt004

I declare myself now an official member of the hot start problem club confuddled

MM!

PS. Still liking the RPM

drew- my race bike will do this every time. once temp is above the middle of the guage it is a bugger to start and generally needs a push however after cooling down - no problem. I assumed it was because there is so much engine heat that the heat soaks into the carbs causing vapourisation but tbh never really understood it

Dave I've had the hot start problem too .................generally it's not a problem but thats becasue I'm aware and try and make sure that the bike either doesn't get so hot it wont re start or just let it get hot and be damned ..................this only ever happens on the startline for a race.

However there is one critical moment when hot not starting is potentially a disaster,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, pitstop at the Manx !

I have a heat shield foil material between the engine and the airbox and my airbox is covered in reflective foil to try and keep the air in the box a cool as is possible while sitting there refilling the tank. I always have one person whose sole job is to push like they have never pushed before. I normally have someone young and supremely fit to do it ...............

It another bit of that jigsaw you know the one with lots of sky and blue pieces..................

Fun isn't it

Got a heat shield too that isolates the carbs from the engine + I still run the cool air ducts.

In the summer the bike was running closer to 100'c with out any problems - don't figure ! geek

Another thought is the ampers in the battery - with the drop in temp maybe that's fallen a bit as I don't use the bike every day. With the digital meter I could see it was generating a regular 14.7V so nothing wrong with the charging system.

I have read a theroy that the HT leads are affected by the heat but can figure the logic..............? ? ?

Especially when you have stick coils :smt005

Can't see HT leads being the problem as a hoon of bikes would have the same problem - it is freakin puzzling though :smt017

Yes weird !

And while the problem is still there wahtever it is I've learned to live with it and avoid it bar that one pitstop every year and believe me I'm pooping bricks untill it fires and I'm away off down Bray Hill...................flat out tucked in and feeding it gears
