Indicators - not sure?

Post by parby81 »

Okay then, I am now on my third relay (standard 12v ones from halfords. 2 x 21w + 5w) (two spade connectors one marked L and the other B - possibly live and bulb, though it doesnt seem to matter which way round these are connected to the brown and orange wires - brown comes from reg/rect and orange goes to handlebar switch)

Seem to keep blowing on me. Indy's work fine whilst going along, basically when there are some revs. If the bike is left to idle the indicator flash rate starts to slow down. Now it slows down so much that it stops permanently on. Either side, both bulbs come on and just stay on. Raise the revs and they start to flash again.

My thoughts.
1 - poor earth somewhere, though i have checked the main earth culprits and they seem fine.
2 - buggered reg/rect
3 - buggered genny

Anybody else got suggestions/ideas.

earthpoints i reckon. Give em a clean. one on the engine on top of the gearbox and one held down by a bolt the holds the fuel pump :smt001

well then. Having ridden to work yesterday all fine, and this morning all fine. I went to come home from work and the battery was dead. I don't just mean a bit flat, it was completely flat, even the neutral light didn't come on. No clicking from anywhere. Jump started it and had to leave the leads on for a minute or two. Then the bike ran fine. Got home, turned bike off, tried to restat and it was really tired. Tested battery and it was about 11.7 volts. Low I know. Yet the optimate says the battery is good. well i've charged the battery over night and it seems to be holding its charge of the bike. Gonna stick it on this afty and see if it still holds its charge. Just to rule out any short circuits where i've been fiddling or maybe caught something taking the engine out and putting it back in. Then we'll go from there.

All Fine on the Battery front, turns out some numpty decided to see what my manual overide fan switch does and left it on. :smt013

So we r back to the indicators.
Engine off and lights off, iny's are fine.
Engine on lights off, indy's fine.
Engine idle and side light on, indy's start to slow.
Engine idle and headlights on, indy's slow to stopping on.
Raise engine speed and indy's are fine.

Checked the voltages coming out of the reg/rect
White wire (goes to main fuse) same as batt, and when engine on about 14.2~14.4v
Brown wire nothing when engine off, same as white wire when engine on, 14.2~14.4v
black/yellow - earth 0v
Three Yellow wires - range from 3v with no lights etc on upwards and vary with engine speed.

This about right
Also when doing the ohms test on reg/rect as in 'L' Manual all my ohms seemed to be opposite to what they should be. I know its not the original reg/rect, don't know if its the right one.

I know, I know, everything seems to point to the reg/rect either being the wrong one or broken.

Hi,

To check your genny, start the bike up with the rider seat, fuse box and fusebox holder off. Attach a meter to the battery and then hold the revs at 4000rpm. If the meter reads below 14.5V then the genny is fooked.

But personally I think it's your regulator rectifier that's shagged.

Regards

Rich

both reg/rect and genny knackered.

Getting no voltage from genny at 4000rpm, should be 43v apparently. New one on order from M&P £45, cradley's wanted £272 for a new one!

Should be here in 10-12 days as they were out of stock. I'll let you all know how it is after that.
