nope. original engine is a flat-4 unit. The diesels (as standard 1.6ltr) were IL4's put in at about a 50deg angle - the block was then reused right up to the 1.9TDI in the Golf, so you can make one of those fit with the special sump and oil pickup off the 1.6.

A canvas tent is probably warmer than that van!? I spose all that snow actually insulated you, otherwise you would have surely expired.
actually, it isnt.. i know someone who tried to do a ski season in a tent.. they spent a lot of time in other people's vans, then got one of their own and installed a wood-burner !
with a 2kw catalytic propane heater, (and twin ring cooker as a booster) plus 30-60mm of solid insulation on the floor/walls/ceiling and the windows blanked with foil bubblewrap stuff, along with a partition between the cab and living space it was easy to keep near 20' in the van even when it dropped to -30'C outside, most of the time its only -15'C and to be honest .. with the low humidity, thats not that cold.

i really fancy buying an old VW camper van to do up... would be cool. sprayin it, doin the inside up, best thing is you wouldnt actually loose money on it either as long as your mods were tasteful.
Remember speed kills, so does smoking, drinking, drugs, fast food and many more good things

Oh but you would.
If you are serious, then do it for the love of it, but don't expect to get back what you spent.
