Personally on the H,

The tubes as described pass cool air down to down draft carbs that are shrouded by the tank , the nature of the design creates a heat trap in there and cool/cold air creates better HP. OK, I am running FCRs with stacks so they are getting a direct benefit but I guess the air inlet on the airbox is right where the cool air is coming in.

Never been out on a crisp night and the bike goes like a whippet ? Another benefit how little it may be is the fuel in the tank is getting some hint of coldness too - just watch any WSBK or MotoGP on a sunny day and you will soon see them covering the tanks, again cold fuel makes better HP - a common belief after filling up a full tank is you think that petrol station has good fuel - its not, its just you have 15litres of cold fuel.

Had your tank resprayed ? make sure you line the bottom again with heat shield otherwise your heating the tank well up ! shocking Must check condition of mine - wondering if this is another hot start cause :smt017

Just my 2p worth

Aside from that, it's not a ZXR unless it has the hoover tubes :smt004 :smt004 :smt004 :smt003
Nothing worse than having an H and not being able to scratch it !

Wonder if you're on to something MM :smt017 During hot start issues there's going to be a lot of hot, hot, hot air trapped in that airbox. I wonder if it is messing with the carburation so much that it won't fire up. Lots of people say they can get it to bump but not fire on the starter. Now that may be because once they start pushing the bike they are creating a draught of fresh, cold air into the airbox. I've also had very close to hot start issues after the bike has been stood for several hours in the direct sun - again, air in the box will have got hot like in an oven.

An interesting experiment to do on a bike with known hot start issues would be to get it well hot, stop it at home, then rig up a fan in front of the bike blasting air onto it. Then see how well it fires up. If it still won't then that's this theory out of the window. But would be interesting......... geek

Ever been hooning down the road, pulled the clutch in, rolled off the throttle and coasted. Watch the the revs drop to near 0.

Thats too much air getting forced in.

The tubes, they are more than just cosmetic.

+1. As I ride through winter I find removing the tubes and tucking them into the screen brace out of the way reduces the effect of carb icing. Doesn't stop it, but it helps

Corrected for you :smt002 Unless you mean you like to see the revs bounce off the limiter for a few seconds :pmsl

Did something similar a few months ago. Threaping down a very bumpy B-road trying not to get kicked out of the saddle and approaching a bend I throttled off to knock it down a cog or two. As I pulled in the clutch the revs went mental. Repeated a second time, same thing. Just about to hit the kill switch thinking a jammed throttle with the bend almost upon me and my anus contracting in proportion to the speed of approach when realised my hand had been jolted round on the twistgrip and that I wasn't quite closing the throttle. Last minute sorted it and got round. Bloke I had recently overtaken in a car seemed more shocked by the experience than I was, although I did think on reflection that it was a bit of a close shave when my arsehole relaxed.

Well, this guy seems to do something interesting with his H1 airbox (see the second pic at ebay auction or mine pasted) ... Apparently he did two holes to force the air intake to the airbox, perhaps to goal something similar to the ram air effect ... but now he is selling it because ... he replaced with a real one ram air ! so, I don't know if it worked or not ... but the idea is interesting for me ... what do you think people ?
