Looking to get a bike.

Post by Jay-ZXR+ »

Hi all done abit of browsing on here and seems a very informative site :)
I'm looking at doing my A2 license soon and considering getting a 400 as a first bike.

Really like the styling of the Zxr, just wondered what I need to look out for when buying one, I've heard the head gaskets can be a but dodgy although having owned a number of Rovers and MGs I'm used to that fear.

What are the bits that often break, rough costs of repairs?

Also they seem alittle small compared to the cbrs what's the handling like in comparison?

Alot of questions I know.

I dont believe for one second the ZXR400 head gasket myth there was somebody on here who reckoned the head gasket should be replaced at 20K miles regardless of it's condition as if it was a service item that wears out...............utter nonsense. In ten years of mercilessly thrashing zxr400s I've never blown a head gasket yet.

With a good shock and properly serviced forks and some decent tyres you will find the ZXR is the sweetest of handling and steering bikes. Turns on a thought and holds it's line beautfully. I reckon I could race one even without a steering damper if I had to.

Lots of spares out there from brand new orginial to second hand and pattern stuff as well pay your monay and take your choice.

Any number of clever upgrades too..............ZX6 front end/wheel/brakes................loverly.
Easy to work on as well nothing complicated at all.

welcome and enjoy

Like the sound of tasty upgrades.....I can never leave anything alone for long :smt077

What are the common faults to look for when buying one?

Gonna have to knock up some restrictor washers, Im assuming a dyno readout is proof enough that the bike is restricted?

Also If anyone fancies swapping to 4 wheels I have a V6 ZS to shift to help towards funding the bike project biggrin

Be careful dude.
If you have an accident and insurers collect your bike for inspection (it has happened in the past to a few people i know) and the see there is no restriction washers in there you will be in a whole world of toad.

Some insurers ask for a copy of the genuine restriction certificate.
Its easy to spot a bike that hasn't been restricted.

Oh and if you are in a 2yr restriction period, and you dont have the kit fitted then you are not insured.
And i hate people who are arent insured :smt018

Im not having a "pop" at you dude, just offering some advice. oldman

What he said.

Some dude chucks his bike down the road and takes me out with him when I'm minding my own business - if he ain't insured then I'm looking at a whole load of hassle to get any kind of compensation for being toad-loads outta pocket. Which makes me ....... unhappy.
