Race Oil and when to change?

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Race Oil and when to change?

Post by Headling »

Hi Guys, you can see my bike in the welcome section of the forum, I am new to 4 strokes to bear with me!

Just wanted an idea of what type of oil to buy (trackside/Bemsee) and when to change oil/filter??

The bloke i bought it of used cheap crap 10-40w semi syn from motor factors, a fellow YPm rider said Silkolene 4t 10-40 will be good?

I was also told 12 hours on oil/filter??

Ideas welcome!

Rock Oil semi synth or if you can afford it, XRP fully synth. I change mine after every meeting and the filter every other, but I know plenty who use it for longer periods, including Roger Middleton in his bikes (believe he uses Rock Oil semi synth and tends to keep it in for 2 or 3 meetings at a time, but no doubt he'll be on here to tell us).

Ive been running Rock oil semi synth with no problems whatsoever, but I do run standard rev limit. Are you guys running semi synth with a higher rev limit? I'm gonna be raising the rev limit so was wondering whether I should go to fully synth?

Following on from my last post. Can anyone shed any light on which oil to use out of Rock Oil synthesis 10w40, Rock Oil Synthesis XRP 5W30 and Rock oil synthesis 4 Racing 15W50. They are all fully synth (and vary in the viscosity numbers) but which one should be used for a racing zxr400 with a 15500 rpm limit?

I know Roger M uses Rock oil, so perhaps he or anyone who have his engines could shed a little light on this

Cheers for any advice

I would say Rock Oil Synthesis 10W40 is the oil you should use and will be plenty good for 15,500rpm and higher. I believe this is the oil that Roger M uses in his bikes and I think he only changes it every other meeting, although according to people I know in Rock Oil, they would say it's good enough to go three or four meetings.

I've got another mate using Rock Oil Guardian in his CBR400 for the past two years and he has had no issues, with his motor clean and needing very little for a refresh. I think he changes it every meeting though.

Personally I use XRP and change it every meeting, but then I don't have to pay for it :smt002 Rock have said it's good to replace just every other meeting, but then being a 5W30 oil means it's not got the wear protection of the heavier Synthesis oil so I'd rather play safe. Mine revs to 15,700.
