how many volts should run 2 each coil?

Post by kurty_22 »

lost spark have tryed another cdi but when i put the voltage meter 2 the end of each coil it only reads 0.46 an the other 0.29 so im thinking is ther a broken wire some where?

The Red connector is 12v.

when i put a voltage meter 2 the wires for the coils i only get the above readings 0.46 and 0.29 the only things on the loom really is the CDI and starter relay which i have tryed both and still the same, both them readings where with just the switch on not pushing the start button.

anyone any ideas?

Have you had a look at the manuals?

Goto zxrworld.co.uk main website and click on Manual, you can download PDF's of the workshop manual, which has the wiring diagram amonst other things, will come in useful for diagnosing things.

Chapter 10 is electrical I think..

You have to remember that the coil is only on for a fraction of a second so ur meter will read much lower than the actual voltage as it samples. Did u use the ac or dc reading range?

Don't the coils have a permanant 12v like the Honda coils?

I seem to remember the wiring diagram saying the RED wires were 12v and the green / black were from the CDI to fire the coils?

You may have a point there, investigates........

.....yes your right, they are on a permanent live and are triggered by earthing through the IC igniter.

Just looking at the diagram, long as your ignition switch works properly and your kill switch isnt faulty you should have a good 12v. So maybe thats a starting point for you :)

Oh good :) Glad i'm not going crazy :D

You've only got to follow the wiring digram from the +12v of the coil to the battery and see what it runs through (Junction Box / Fuses) and find out why you don't have 12v then bobs your uncle

It runs from +12v on the battery through the ignition switch and kill switch then straight to the coil. Those should be ur starting points.

Aye i thought ther should be 12v at them wires, but if the switch gear is cracking it over ok do you still think it would stop the spark?

just checked the voltage at the wires again an the day it was just over 12v which is about rite, i havnt even done anything 2 it but even with the volts up it still isnt sparking.

what is the chances of 2 coils going at the same time??? the bike was going and all its done from i last had it started a few weeks back is set in the garage

More likely to be CDI than both coils being dead.. is this connected properly / clean connetors?

have you got a spare CDI to try.

Oh right.. Well the CDI fires by getting a signal from the pickup coil, which is located in the front right part of the engine.. you can mesure their resistance.. and make sure the connector is in properly :)
