Liam,

"Bemsee" (British Motor Cycle Racing Club) is a good place to start and they run a 400 series for either tuned or standard 400's, so if you have a ZXR400 its a reasonable place to start.
Having sais that, to start racing, and to be anywhere near competitive you will need to upgrade suspension and brakes and get spare wheels and wets, so its better to start off buying a race prepped bike than start with your own.

You need to do a compulsary ACU course for your racing licence, then joing a club and get your licence. (About £150) Leathers, boots, gloves and lid (£750-£1000)
Most clubs run a weekends racing, so practice each day and two races a day for about £200-£250 a pop.

Best thing would be to look up a club race at your local circuit, and pop along and chat to a few folk in the paddock.
