Same is happening where i work, i build pumps for oil rigs, sewage treatments and power stations. Since prices of oil have dropped the work has vanished. We are doing back orders till end of june, a month of painting the floors and walls then i'm out the door.

Re: bad news at work
Sorry to hear that fellas.
We have just been taken over by the NHS care trust plus(from the council)and although not as bad as your predicaments we have just had our pay cut by a small amount and now have to work an extra half hour each week to come into line with NHS policy. You'll be pleased to know that all of the bosses got huge pay rises.

Action is the antidote to despair.

Re: bad news at work
Nothing quite as major like this where i work, but they wanna reap back 50million quid they have lost over the last 2 years, and according to the management if we dont reach the target we loose our jobs. But we know its crap, why lay off 4 people on minimum wage when you can lay off 2 managers and save the same money? The managers will get managed out of the business cos they wont lay off the poeple who actually keep the place running.
They arent recruiting any more people either, and if people leave (like i will be soon with any luck) they wont be replacing them. They already run the company lean with as few people as possible to keep product prices low, it will only take one or two people from my dept (or even just me cos i work so hard
) and it'll push everything over the edge, they wont be completing at the end of the day and the already frustrated people that work there will be pushed even further. The attitude of people there is so down its actually quite sad, no one wants to be there and they are sick of being pushed from pillar to post, its definately not the way work should be.
Theyve also got people on the shop floor (including me) going out of the store during working hours to approach businesses trying to get thier custom, as were so quiet, god knows why, we have a marketing team, i guess we have to make up for the work they cant manage :S
But i remain positive, is ive been job hunting (first time in about 5 months) for some of my holiday (still a week left) and ive had a couple of positive leads. Target is to be in a position of handing in my notice, or at least not long after, i get back to work!

Re: bad news at work
I work in a small manufacturing company, I'm the office manager / admin / accounts / marketing team. (all in one!) I'm not paid a huge amount, but I like the guys here and I like the varied work.
We had a couple of apprentices here who we have paid for them to get through college, get them qualified as sheet metal workers. They have both left us now to get an extra 50p per hour at a place down the road. One of them didn't like his new place, as it was more assembly line work as opposed to varied all about the shop floor work, like we encourage here - and no overtime available. (we contract guys for 40 ours per week, guarantee a 45 hour week available, but most guys get about 50 hours in per week, overtime at 1 1/2 time after 45 hours.) He asked to come back on the same money as before, we looked at our situation and said nope, because although he's a good worker, we just figured out how to get the work done without him. Work has dropped off somewhat, but we're coping and although it looks all doom and gloom for anything past the next 4 months, we're not in any new situation.
you see those big galvanised Muc Off shelves in bike shops with the perforated shelves? We make those
If anyone is a mig/tig welder / sheet metal worker for thin sheet metal and needs a job, I can get you a job in Bournemouth.
