i was quite lucky in that respect, the surgeon said i hadn't ground away any of the joint surface, just the patella was removed and a fair bit of skin.crushedlizard wrote:Ow, Jesus Christ man. I always wince when I see a biker in Jeans. That must be quite sore by now. These things seem to hurt during healing than they do at the time!
I bet you'll be sore for a while, but it's amazing how well the body heals. Was there any damage to the actual joint surface? Or did the Patella take the brunt of it?
I love the idea of a titanium knee. I can imagine seeing this biker in shorts dragging their bare knee, sparking along the tarmac! People would think it's the fucking Terminator!
Hope you heal up good.
i'll definatly ride again, i'll ride bikes for as long as i can hold em up. injuries happen i only regret not taking measures that would have prevented this. toad happensnc73 wrote:man that sucks...dunno if i'd have the guts to ride again after a fall like that. i tried to warn my sis in law's husband once but he didnt listen, good thing he got home ok.

Given that you've completely worn your kneecap away I very much doubt if leathers would have made that much difference you would still have had a nasty injury.
I think replacement kneecaps are plastic .I work with a guy who has two of them he's had them over 40 years
Nasty injury mate get well soon and do as the physios tell you it will be sore but worth it in the end

I bet they would have! All my leathers have had 40mm plastic under the reinforced leather of the knees and threads like this make sure I'll be choosing at least that level of protection in the future! If you were sucked in by the shite about those Draggin jeans and suchlike, however...cargo wrote:Given that you've completely worn your kneecap away I very much doubt if leathers would have made that much difference you would still have had a nasty injury.

at the very least they would have kept you all in one place, could have mounted your knee cap on the wall then

Hope you make a speedy recovery mate!!
I do think the sort of knee armour such as that in one piece suits would have saved most of his injuries. Probably stll torn a ligament as armour doesn't stop sideways movement, but it wouldn't have been ground down/shattered

thanks for your support guys
Just a small update. no new pics atm
I had some more surgery on my leg this weekend gone where they tried to use my cruciate ligament to attach to the patella and my shinbone so that my quadraceps would have the connection required to operate my lower leg since i managed to grind over 2cms off the lower tendon. My repair apparently is not an easy one as i have an unsual knee injury that they haven't dealt with before, in most cases where the patella is broken or shattered it simply slips out from under the tendon attaching thigh to lower leg where as i have managed to lose the patella andthe covering parts of that tendon severing all connection. my latest operation wasn't successful so i'm to see another specialist soon about have a donor achillies tendon and a small part of the ankle bone grafted onto my shin and then attached to the new patella is what i've been told recently by the consultant. i may have different solutions posed to me once i see the specialist but for now this is where it looks like it's heading.
Feeling good now, and being as optimistic about my recovery as much as possible. just getting a little bored sat on my ass all day long. my mobility is much better than it was but still feels mentally strange moving around knowing i have no knee cap in my leg at the moment.

How's this for even more stupid than riding in jeans:
Last rugby match (ladies) of the season on Sunday, doing a few tackle practices in warm up. I tackled the skinniest boniest player on our team, managed to break my collarbone, dislocate her kneecap and fractured her fibula.
I played about 30 mins of the match, after which we shared an ambulance to the hospital.
We won 74-0 and finished second in our league though.
