Re: Meet our members
thing is though, my 924 has cost less to buy and insure.. and rebuild, and respray.. and its RWD
ok, i've a few years on you, but i only got round to my car test a couple of years ago (bike licence since 96), and have zero NCB so i reckon my insurance is comparable
and im a bit "spoilt" when it comes to having had access to some nice cars due to my last real job,
1987 911 targa 3.2
1981 911sc 3.0
2002 997 carrera S
boxster
boxster S
elise
ferrari 308gtsi
ferrari 30gtb
ferrari 360 modena (briefly)
bentley S3
bentley T2
austin healey 3000
e-type series 1
e-type series 3
daimler sovereign LWB
mk1 escort track prepped

cobra rep (pilgrim)
mgb-gt
aston martin V8
tvr chimaera
tvr griffith
tvr tamora
lotus elan (90's)
mr2 turbo

and some others ..
lol
classic cars are a piece of piss to insure mate, just get a limited mileage policy and replace the speedo if you go over your allowance.
if they are insured as a second vehicle alongside somthing else (which you never use .. naturally) its even cheaper

Re: Meet our members
I'd love to get a classic policy for it. I tried when I picked her up.
I got all the way through all the fellow at Chris Knott's questions, and then was told
"Ok, we can quote you for .... hang on, you ARE 25, aren't you?"
You see, the major hangup with me getting classic insurance policy for anything right now, is that I can't.
Most classic insurers require a driver to be 25.
The remainder, from what I can gather, require the driver to be 21.
I will be 20 in twenty-nine days..
*Edit*
Also, as a side line here, what did you think of the TR6?
And the B-GT?
And the series 1?
And the 81 911?
Because all of those, in that order, are cars I've thought seriously about trying to get hold of sometime within the next five years.

Re: Meet our members
tr6 was rubbish, the lucas fuel injection didnt work when it was new, and the rear suspension is weird.. it feels like a car 20 years older than it is. They can be made nice, but you'll spend the purchase price again in achieving it.
get a tr4a instead, simpler, better built, nicer looking, more integrity.
mgb-gt (chrome bumper naturally) was really very nice, but i wouldnt want one if i was 6 foot or ever intended carrying more than one passenger, even I dont fit in the back seats ! did a lot of miles in that actually, used it as my own for quite a few months, was essentially my first car even though it wasnt mine. i've always said my 924 feels like a german mgb-gt, which gives you an idea.. they do rot though.. a lot.
the 911sc was nicer to drive and quicker (lighter) than the '87 targa, i like 911's they are utterly bullet proof, very solid usable car. Only thing is, everything you've heard about them trying to swap ends and kill you is true, by the time the back has started to go.. its gone and the weight of the engine just pulls you round like a pendulum, (i spun both of them quite a few times) and they do funny things if you go in too hot and lift off too.. basically, you drive them like a bike.. you dont take the piss. And if its not a turbo, it wont actually be very quick off the line, your vitesse is almost def quicker.. I got out dragged by a clio in the targa away from the lights one day, and i was trying n all. I like them, they are usable, they dont break down, but i wouldnt trust myself not to get carried away and crash it, so i dont have one.. thats actually the only reason i dont have one, as they are pretty cheap these days, about 8k will get a non shitter.
i presume you mean the series 1 e-type .. gorgeous, taut, lovely, precise, growly.. but (and its a BIG BIG BIG but) the one i drove was properly properly minted, ground up bare metal restoration by john chatham, new (tuned) engine, new gearbox, new brakes, new (uprated) suspension, new everything .. it was better than it was the day it was built, most of them are a bit toad tbh.. expensive baggy posers cars with a thirst for money and a tendency to rot. To illustrate this, the chatham one i drove only 4 years ago, is now stripped to a shell and being done again. It only covered a couple of thousand miles, but it got parked outside for 9 months, and that was that, the brakes fell apart (the master cylinders and servo's eat themselves if the car isnt used) the floor rotted.. ok john's a perfectionist, and it could have been tarted up (like most of them are) but it warranted doing again properly (its his own car)
my favourites were ;
ferrari 308 gtsi, which feels far more robust, planted and torquey than you probably imagine, and just oozes charm,
alfa , very tail happy twitchy little thing but very light and precise.. just fun, and classic itallian style,
integrale (280bhp chip, 4wd, would out accellerate a bike up to 50, but topped out at 120, vicous, fun, manic and its got 5 doors and a boot!,
Healey 3000mk3 BJ8, which i actually refused to get out of as it was just such a nice place to be, ok it was a chatham car, but unlike the e-type, this was an original unrestored car, John had been looking after it for the owner for over 30 years, so it was mechanically perfect, but with that perfect classic car patina and smell. I want one, but wouldnt trust myself with one.. i'd hurt it, i need to be older and have an air conditioned garage for it.
elise's are fun, but i didnt drive it much so cant really comment, and tvr's are dirt cheap these days.. mate of mine just bought a 4 litre chimaera for 5k.

Re: Meet our members
try adrian flux for classic policies, they are cheap and flexible and give discounts for being an owners club member, i gave my login to the commervanfan site and got 15% discount

Re: Meet our members
I believe flux are another one that want the proposer of the policy to be 25, unfortunately.
I'd love an original 911, and the SC is the model I've in mind for one if I got one. It's just the 911 that pops into most people's heads when you say to them 'Porsche'.
Shame to hear your findings about the TR6 though, I love the looks of those, and the sound. It's not quite stag territory, but my does it make some good noises.
And yes, Dad's got a chrome bumper B, I'm well aware of the rotting problem.

Re: Meet our members
Watched the sand racing one night when David Knight was out, we always seem to get stood where the biggest pile of sand is. Great for fallers, oops.
Peel is the best place to live on the island I reckon, always something going on and plenty of pubs and friendly folk.
Douglas is a steaming pile of pooh by comparison.
