And next week we'll get a thread from our friend..................."I fitted a new gasket to my engine cover but it's leaking oil now can anyone one tell me whats wrong"

20 posts later he'll tell us about the corn flakes and then he'll know why his bike leaks oil

Don't bodge gaskets they don't cost that much and if fitted carefully they will survive being removed and reused a few times...........................

Most motor factors have gasket paper for cutting your own - not difficult to do with a new Stanley blade.

Fairly sure Halfords now stock it too.

Agree with cargo, student days are over so no more botchin :smt002

paper gaskets are evil and something that we are actively trying to get rid of.

sealant is almost as bad and is an absolute PIA if you need to take the thing apart again.

for the sake of a couple of quid - do the job properly.

also as a tip if you cant get them to sperate dont be tempted to use a flat head screw driver you'll never get it to seal properly again...Ruber mallet should normaly get them apart.

Team Cargo top tip...........................

When I fit a new gasket I put a light smear of grease on one of the faces.................next time the cover comes off the gasket is usually stuck to the face that had no grease and is nearly always still intact and so can be reused.....................

cheers for the tips,
im a hgv mechanic at a scania main dealer, and the sealant scania use isnt all that bad tbh, paper gaskets are toad though,
the cashig has come off easily, the gasket was leaking very slightly, but i wanted to re-spray it anyway as it looked crap
