Almost highsided today!!

Post by CarneyUK »

Went out on the bike today as the roads looked nice and dry. I chose a few nice roads in the local area and off I went. After about 30 mins of nice slow leisurley riding I decided I was going to open her up a bit and (due to nice dry roads) headed for my favourite knee down slip roads on the A303 :excited

My first mistake was thinking that because the roads were dry they had the usual amount of grip. My second mistake was thinking that riding like Miss Daisy would get any heat in my tyres (especially as I have Dunlop D204's)

So I get to my favourite slip road, get the knee out ready and start to lean the bike. I didn't quite have enough speed and I knew the knee was a couple of inches away so I twisted the throttle... you could say a little too much .... as I felt my knee touch the ground, the back end slipped away. Now I have always been told that the worst thing to do is close the throttle .... so what do you think I did .... :wanker

The back end gripped and the next thing I knew I was looking at the front mudguard, my butt above my head and thinking toad, toad, toad! Luckily I landed back on the bike and then had a wobble from hell. I could see the gravel that had built up on the white lines between the slow lane and the slip road and I managed to get the bike stable and went into the slow lane. Luckily there was nothing coming fast up the slow lane, but I was still doing about 70 anyway.

Once I was on the dual carraigeway I waited for the next layby, pulled over and had a fag!! shocking

Ride Safe Peeps!!

LOL I bet it would have looked damn cool though!

Well held, that man! :smt003

On a more contraversial note, I bet if you weren't hanging off going for the knee-down that would have spat you straight off - so more proof that it's safer. :smt002
Who needs tyres when you've got knees!!

actually, Jamz, your far safer not leaning off when you high side. I remember Robert Gray from performance bikes was talking about this when he did an article on power sliding bikes. When the bike grips after sliding, if your hanging off its a bit like throwing a ball and getting a good swing from behind your head, whereas sitting upright is like throwing a ball with less of a swing so you dont get thrown as far.

Well saved m8!!!

I highsided an FZR400 two years ago, not hanging off and it was like being fired out of a cannon. Your bit about the throttle made me laugh. You, me, EVERYONE knows...DONT CLOSE THE F'CKING THROTTLE. Anyone whos never been there, try not shutting it, its so instinctive. Bet you looked like V.Rossi at a slippery Donington!!

You were lucky, I broke a leg and took about 3-4 months to get back on. Bike was buggered as well.

Glad to hear that you made it through. BTW dont let this be a lesson to you LOL. Live Fast!

lol

Don't you wish someone videoed those moments for you?
I remember my friends telling me "it'll suprise you how hard you can push it in the wet". So one day I exited a roundabout... speedway style. Luckily I saved it... well actually I think the bike just saved itself. :smt005
Bet it looked wicked though...

Throttle? you know it, it's like telling someone not to look down when they are on a rock face!!
Yeah bloody lucky .... it was pure luck I stayed on, nothing to do with me. All I remember is it going, closing the throttle, then hanging on like a bitch shocking
Gonna have to start strapping my camera on more often.

Keep it safe.
