http://www.ubuntu.com/ its one of the most popular distros.

I've used the desktop one on a very, very old laptop (266MHz, 128mb RAM!!!) and it ran very well. I think there's a quote on their site that claims a downtime of 1.1hrs per annum or something ridiculous! Very solid and very light. I use a linux server for my site and file structure was a bit different (not sure if that's just the host's change or a linux thing) but I don't use apache etc so don't know too much detail.
To be fair I don't think there's much difference other than stability. Think you can use SQL etc on a linux server, just don't use the MS one. :smt002

ubuntu is a branch of debian linux.. (well, thats how it started) has more up to date packages, but slightly less stability, and uses debian's awesome package management system (apt*).

for a server you cant beat the stable version of debian, but its slightly harder (geekier) to install and configure.

*apt allows me to update EVERY piece of software i have installed with one command, including things im actually using at the time, resolves all dependencies, just gets on with it.

with linux I only have to reboot if i install a new kernel.. my desktop is my webserver, and media server for my home network, it's been on for 3 months. hasnt crashed once.. and thats with the "testing" version of debian + some funky experimental stuff on top.

MSSQL as opposed to MySQL

The trouble with having an open mind, is that people will insist on coming along and trying to put things in it.

it isnt really the MSSQL servers with gaping security flaws it's sloppy input coding that allows anyone with half a braincell to inject SQL commands with privileges and dump tables.

kde or gnome though ?

kde4.1 + compiz fusion is well nice.
Tbh, I've not really screwed with it much, and nor can I claim to be much good with it, or know much about it. Last time I got anywhere with getting it cushty, my mother pinched my laptop, formatted and repartitioned, and then realised she couldn't reuse an XP home disc, so had to put on a 30 day trial.
I spent a fair ol' while on that, so I wasn't pleased.
In fact, I'm gonna go nick it back.

*Edit* Ok, that 'please' icon automatically coming up when you type the word 'please' is really starting to f*** me off. Do I have the option of disabling that?

*2nd Edit* Oh, so now the option of disabling the swear filter has vanished? I liked the trust in that, it felt like I was considered more responsible than your average monkey, trusted to be able to chose when it would be appropriate to use more coarse language.

*3rd Edit* Sorry, not trying to come across as argumentative, or grumpy. I've just had less than my daily Guinness quota normally consists of. I'll go rectify that.
Vard.

rant 1 - I know exactly what you mean. Look below where you type, there are 6 tick boxes, tick the 2nd one down 'disable smilies'. That will disable any smilies in the post you are writing.

rant1/ 2 - Goto your user control panel, board preferences, then edit display option in the left hand side. There are then several tick boxes, one indication yes or no, third one down 'display smilies as images. Only thing is tho that will not show any at all. 3 more options down you will find 'enable word censoring' obviously you can choose yes or no. :smt001

rant 3 - No problem, hope you enjoyed your quota :smt003

Ok. Smiley test. - Please -
The swear filter is already disabled, as I suspected, so why did it automatically star out my verbal vehemence?
Swear filter check, - f***, twat, bugger, toad, fucking, piss -

*Edit* Ok, smileys dead. Thank you Rob.
Vard.

It stars out the present active, but not the infinitive.
Odd huh?

At work, XP Pro. It's gonna be a hell of a long time before our IT Admin will let Vista anywhere near the place.

At home, my main desktop is running Ubuntu 6.10, and the laptop I'm typing this from is running Xubuntu 7.04.

Second desktop in the living room is currently running XP Pro, because I've just bought that box from my work for a token £50 :smt003 , and that's how it came. I'll probably leave that on (well it's a free, genuine licence, and It'll do for guests and games :smt001 ) but set it up to dual boot - I fancy having a play with Compix Fusion, purely for the eye candy factor, and it's the most powerful of the various machines we've got.
In the garage:
Kawasaki ZXR400 L3 - shiny
Suzuki DR800 - bouncy
1978 Suzuki GS400 - PROJECT RETRO RACER!
Kawasaki GPz500S - for sale soon
Honda CG125 BR-J - in bits

Ubuntu (and Kubuntu ...and so on) is great but I've been using Windows for far too long now to bother learning the intricacies of a new OS - I'm a developer, which makes me lazy :)
