Another one bites the dust...

First nice weekend since I passed my test and a white van goes and pulls out on me, completely trashing the bike and catapulting me over the bonnet into the road. Thankfully I've not broken anything and just have a few bruises to show for it.

I'm now left with the awesome task of trying to sort out everything with the insurance. Only trouble is that the bikes got a micron race can on it (which they don't know about) so I'm not sure whether to leave it on or try and get hold of an original one before they come and collect it.

What does everyone think?

take it off and smash it and say it happened in the crash. try and loose the micron badge off it.

if it was me, id just leave it on...shouldnt be going through your insurance anyway and the 3rd parties insurance company should just reimburse you.

take it off and hide it, say it fell off when the bike was being lifted off the road and it got binned.

they'll do anything they can to not pay, we are awaiting a payout on a written off bike from over 18 months ago, 3rd parties fault, 3rd parties insurance, at one point they even tried to claim the accident hadn't happened and that we were making it up having chosen a car at random to blame and pursue for damages !

this is despite the fact that they had written their details down for us at the scene and we still had the piece of paper with their fingerprints and handwriting on.

then they tried to say the bike had already been written off once before so they wouldnt pay, true, it had been .. and it had been fixed and re mot'd but it took another 3 months and a court date being issued for them to admit they were talking shite and offer a cheque .. which they still (2 months on) havent sent.

yeah dont give them any reason to not payout, take it off. I remember my friend had a 1.0 fiesta where a 1.6 had accidentally fallen in, had an accident in it, next day we were outside lifting the engine out with a broom stick (no im not joking).

it doesnt really matter unless what you've done to the bike can be attributed to the cause of the accident. so an aftermarket exhaust will not affect anything, other than the fact that if it's damaged you claim for it. no matter what it is insurance companies try to bully everyone, ignore the bullsh*t and just carry on with the claim.

ask to speak with the solicitor involved with your claim personally aswell to discuss any particulars, he'll give you far more information than anyone here can.

I'm with Xphyral.

You're more likely to fk the claim up by changing it now. If they think you've tampered with the bike after the incident they're well within their rights to pull your claim.

When I trashed my VFR in a similar accident I never even thought about the Scorpion race can wide enough to get Big Daddy's tits in, and nobody ever said a word about it, either. I wouldn't worry about it.

Just to add insult to injury, the cops have given me a ticket because the number plate was too small, what a load of bulls***

I wouldn't do that if I was you.

I had someone knock me off a bike that had previously been a cat D write off although fully repaired with a valuation from an independant dealer. I got some second hand 'as new' parts but with no receipt, they wouldn't beleive any of it. All I had was a a name and tel number of the bloke. The next thing I hear is an investigator had turned up at his place one evening asking questions, and still didn't beleive him, he was obviously a bit vague, as you would be with someone just turning up asking questions about something that was over a year earlier!

So, IMHO, if you give them any reason of suspicion(ie lying about the can), they'll investigate and look for any reason not to pay.

Cool, I think i'm gonna stick it back on, I've had a chat with my boss who used to work for Carole Nash, and he agrees that they are less likely to pay out if they see that the bike has been modified since the accident.
