clutch problems......help please...

hi not been on forum for ages now , just after a bit of help/info.....
ive a 400H model and the clutch is more like a switch ,(its either ON orOFF !!!)
its apain because without loads of revs and releasing the lever very very carefully it will just stall........
its had new plates(not steels)
and new spring....
the cable seems fine as its not heavy to pull............
any ideas would be great

forgot to mention i get alot of clutch rattle wen levers out in neutral .........
dont no if this gives any more clues??

Hello mate, this is a new problem, but sounds like its clean out of oil to me. Have you checked the oil level?

Clutches on most ZXR's are noisy/rattly. Did it start this after the plates were done? Possibly something has been assembled wrong?

oil was done same time as clutch(not the filter though!)
its done no more than 200 mile since.....
em...... yep im pretty sure it was noisey before.....
lol...cant you tell ive not used it much lately.... :smt013

yeah it probably was noisy before, but did the grabby clutch start after the plates were done or did you change them to try and sort it?

Just a thought, has the bike been standing for a long time? I get the feeling you dont use it much? If its been standing for quite a while its possible the clutch plates are stuck together slightly and just need loosening up a bit. You did soak the plates in oil before you installed them right? But other wise a good long ride should loosen them up.

no its always been grabby that was one of the reasons for replacing plus it slipped slightly when caining it!!
the new plates were soaked in oil for about 3-4 hours prior to installing....
it does seem to be worse when the motor is warm(running temp)

Thats bizzare, can only assume its something to do with the clutch release mechanism? Have a look in the manuals and make sure you torqued everything up correctly and make sure everything is there and put together properly.

i am toying with the idea it may be the clutch basket????
ive had a similar problem yeeeeears ago on a RM250 motox,that ended up being the basket had "saw toothed" and did not release the plates evenly???
but when i did the 400 i didnt notice that this was the case?????
but i do know im F**KIN SICK OF IT STALLIN !!!!!! :smt013

yeah thats possible, if the tangs have work badly then i suppose that cold give you some engaging problems. if its not too bad i believe you can file them flat again.

try de-glazing the steel plates first .. its free and may well sort it .. any small burrs on the basket can be filed smooth.. the rattle is normal/non-terminal

but wots involved in "deglazing"? is it just a rub with sand paper and a clean ???

its worth having a look at the actuator rod - the part of it that that catches the spigot in the bearing in the centre of the pressure plate wears into a radius and can have a big effect on how the clutch works. It can be built up with a bit of weld and machined back to the original shape.

Worth having a look at anyway...but I'd reckon its the basket fingers as well.
