well bugger me backwards if this isnt making my brain itch!

Post by Bestie »

hi all,

im BACK! i know you all missed me like a hole in the head, and tis good news both mine and your dear friend psycho paulgtr is well and now getting a zedthou, i need to sort my wheels out!

im sure i posted a while ago about my hein gericke led indys blinking really low, i mean not visabel at all.........untill you rev the throttle.

when i arm the alarm, they blink bloody bright....so i thought maybe a battery prob right? alarm has internal and might be that.....bobbed the multi meter on the indys and resistirs and the batt went flat in 10 mins!

so charged up, all ok, used the optimate and all other electrics fine, cept those DAM indys!

now, i have followed northern andys build with interest and got an undertray for £50, bought all new metal hein indys and i thought, why not test em?

so today i bob em on, not disconnxthe old ones, and guess what?

yup, THEY WORK BRILL!!! cept the old ones (all 4) DONT!!!!

AND to top it all off, my bike wont turn over properly.....it makes a buzzing sound in the junction box, all fuses ok.....hold button, nothing, ley go, hold, nothing, repeat 4 or 5 times, and BANG! it fires to life as if i awoke it from a nocturnal slumber!

can anyone tell me what the hell is going on here? im losing precious riding time, and its issing me off!

help MUCH appreciated, and ill give you a cyber beer for your efforts !

ta
bestie

ps also cos i just turned 27 this week i have birfday earth credits to spend and i want to wheelie, oh yes, anything to piss paul off......he loves my back firing exhaust which sounds more like a speed triple but now he is getting a thou with 2, that sound miles better, so i was wondering, if after all the hype and chats over dropping a tooth on the front, does it work and is it worth it? ive seen the youtube vid......and i wanna do it....yeah baby!

no idea on the indy's mate, but if you want easy wheelies on a zxr you'll need to do more than drop a tooth on the front, im running 14/45 and whilst it perks things up, its hardly on its back wheel all the time. 14/48 however ought to help get it up, although then the ratio's will be so short you'd better be quick at hooking second :smt002

I've done some looking into sprockets for more torque, JT go as low as 14 on the front, and renthal go upto 50 teeth on the rear in an Alloy sprocket. should give some lift, I'm thinking of it myself when I have some more money.

you'll need a longer chain if you go up to 50 teeth on the back, i think you can do 14/48 on a standard 110 link chain, can def do 14/47 :)

cheers for the replies guys,

i decided today to go buy a battery, and dropped £50 on one, thinking it was a gel type, the bloke at my local kwakdealer assured me it was, upon opening the ga-bumph, and filling the cells, i realise its a normal MF after all, robbing blunt!

anyroad, i at last have a little good news as a voltage guide came with it, and it basically reads like this:

BATTERY VOLTAGE READING USING A VOLTMETER

STATE OF CHARGE MF BATTERY
100% 13.0V
75% 12.8
50% 12.5
25% 12.22
0% 12.0 OR LESS!!!

I took a reading just now of my 7yr old battery and it reads 11.95V so it must be the battery, if it aint at least its a costly elimination. Its on optimate charge now so ill know more tom am, just before i host BESTIES BIRFDAY BANK HOL BBQ BASH so before i become intoxicated and stupid, disregarding all personal safety and igniting bbq with lynx and matches (i dont mind africa & vice flavoured burgers anyways!)

hope it works, logically it should but, well, spock got it wrong sometimes didnt he? no? bummer!

take it easy!

oh, and andy, im about to butcher my undertray unit with a dremmel, i dont wanna keep the shotgun lights, prefer the original unit with 2 led bulb clusters in looks ok to me, any tips? also any tips on mounting the rrsend tailtidy?

cheers again!

happy birthday fella!

Crap on the battery £50 is slam, more than I'd pay even for a gel.

I guess the readings they give are open circuit and you measured yours open circuit (with no load)? Was your starter motor not getting much opportunity to turn over before it became too slow then, at 12v?

Erm undertray wise, I kept the shotties, but it lends itself well enough to being hacked about for the stock light to fit through when I weighed it up. I have an oxford Tt, The simpler rrsends work fine but this new generation with the adjustable angle of dangle :smt018 are more trouble I've heard.

cheers andy!

well, the new battery was a waste of time, same toad happens!

i dunno if my mate shorted out the circuit somewhere but it makes a buzzing sound at the junction box...im stumped now!

if i turn off the headlight, the indys are great!

Just to jump in on the buzzing in the fuse box. Mine was doing a similar thing turned out to be a short in the wiring where the loom passes under the frame by the shock. sometimes the thing would start and sometimes not.
Few new wires and soldering and hey presto all sorted.

Might be worth a look, Pain to get at though.

Good Luck

well diesel  im very flattered, and well, gobsmacked.......you no what the highway code says though about one way streets lol!

still no clue as to why this is happening to my bike..i may just have to drop to my knees and grin whilst dr diesel executes the prescription, however, i would prefer to ride my bike!

im awaiting a junction box off ebay, so that may sort the starter out, but the indys? i think i may just revert back to the old ones! a friend at hein gerickes is having similar probs, but he has to keep the revs up......maybe the indys?

I think its to do with the alarm. Have you tried removing the main alarm fuse and checking if it still is dodgy?

hi all

northern andy - took out the fuse, and still the same!

so, i spoke to a bloke off ebay, specialized_zxr., who lives near me in leeds, and is a fab breaker guy with numerous zxr parts readily available...

i showed him the prob, and he rang me the next day.

turns out, the headlight mod, in the workshop isnt LED indy friendly, as they are 20watts (55w bulbs) too high each they draw too much power, and this affects the LEDs!!!

so, this kind chap has agreed to do the following:

fit my unertray, keeping the shotgun lights
fit vdr400 pillion pegs in polished alloy with grab handles,
fir rrsend tailtidy and raceplate with plate light
AND

custom build my seat cowl.

its a bolt on job, but soon to be fibreglassed to a spare pillion seat to enable the rapid quick change if i take our lass (fat chance, any biker chicks wanna pillion seat? :smt002 )

so it will look fab...

im even thinking of dropping a zx6 engine in, and im gutted cos i could have had pyschopauls crashed bike for peanuts, BOO!

so, thanks for your advice guys and remember the above!

cheers all

but the high beam remains the same as standard bulbs doesn't it? I've got the LED's on my mirrors, and filament lamps at the back, pulling 23w for rears with small (unknown) wattage at front off a 2x10w flasher unit. And can't see how the headlight would make the slightest differnce. More info to quieten me down please.
