keeping bike ok thru winter

Post by Mogas 64 »

i keep mine on an optimate and once a fortnight run the engine untill the fan cuts in this makes sure you keep the top end lubed and stops the carbs gumming up, i always start mine with no choke or throttle from cold and depending on weather ie how cold etc then use choke , never had a problem yet , just a tip hope it helps.

I've just changed the end can back to standard to see if it makes any difference and also to keep next door happy!! ART cans are loud when you work shifts.

The bike was running fine and I use it daily si I don't think the carbs should have gummed up.

The carbs will only gum up if the bike has been left standing for a few months without being started. I think there was someon here recently that had your problem and they thought it might be the end can on thier bike.

to ali j,
this will probably sound like a stupid question but have you made sure that the ht leads are all connected properly i had the same sort of problem and i checked everything, carbs, filters, plugs, air box,and it turned out to be a dodgy ht lead.........its just a thought mate :smt017

I changed the end can back to standard and seems to have helped slightly or maybe I just can't hear the problem anymore!

It still wont start on choke and once the bike is warm if you pull in the clutch and let the revs off, the engine stalls. It did thid with the old can aswell but if left standing would idle over fine!

I'll check the HT leads as I had two lumps of ice for hands when I changed the plugs and they may well be loose. (Scotland, if it's nae raining it's snowing! :smt009 )

hmm, interesting you mention about the clutch lever being pulled in. give the two contacts underneath the clutch lever a look, they may be corroded, also check the side stand switch rod is retracting fully (may as well clean it while your at it too they get proper mucky) when the stand is up and the connector block that connects to it. The ZXR has an automatic cut out if you leave the side stand down and uses a side stand switch and clutch lever switch as part of the cut out circuit, if either of those are playing up it would definately give you some starting problems. Not so sure about the runing problem when riding but give em a check anyhooo.

I don't think it is that cos when you let the clutch back out yer away again. I'm sure the circuit is working because I went to ride off the other day with the stand and the engine cut out. With the stand back up. there was no problems.

I'm convinced that it's the carbs or HT leads!

I whipped the tank of today to set about the carbs and noticed that the HT leads were not the same as robs pictures in the other string.

It looked like 2 and 3 were swapped round but I'm not sure as the coils were fitted to the oppiste sides. Would the bike run at all if this was the case?

I also found a couple of the electrical connections were corroded after putting it back together and had to strip it down again to fix them!

Thinking this may have been the problem, I didn't take the carbs apart, put back together and went for test blast. :smt003 Only sunnt day of the year.

It still wont start on choke but it doesn't stall anymore. There is a big flat spot untill you pass 4K and then its fine. I think I'll give it another shot of Redex and if that doesn't work, I'll book it in to get the carbs sorted!
