How many of you scrape knee's on public roads? Opinions?
I started scraping my knees on my Zxr 400 a couple of months ago after riding for a little over a year.
I practiced in a small abandoned car park at about 30mph and since then realised how easy it really is and that there is still a considerable safety margin left before it lets go.
So now I started scraping my knee pretty much every opportunity I get (within reason). I took the time to learn and understand how to corner correctly and have covered over 15000 miles since I started so I know I'm doing it correctly.
Just wandering how many of you scrape knees on public roads and your opinions on doing so?

I'm almost lost for words, I'm picturing a traffic cop I know, terrific rider, and his face when I asked his opinion on knee out antics on public roads.
Not for me at all, leave it to road and track racing where it's actually required.

Haha fair enough
I presume the police would take a dim view on knee scraping

And I do agree with you when you say it is not required for road riding, it's just the fun of doing it

Do you reckon points on your licence if the cops caught you (in the UK)?

We'll they may have a different view on it in America, and I'm from the uk.
I know they allow it on the "snake" in mulholland because rnickeymouse on YouTube has hundreds of videos of people dragging knees with a cop car sat on the corner

Check his vids out on YouTube- rnickeymouse
Loads of videos of people falling off too and the comments section on the videos is absolutely hilarious

Yeah, my thoughts too.cargo wrote:Why do you feel the need to say in the UK
I wouldn't be worried about points (UK?), more killing myself riding too fast on public roads.
I was behind a guy on a blade the other day, he decided to impress me maybe? by throwing out his knee going into a left hand side street, in doing so he veered out to the right, across a mainish road practically onto the white lines before he turned, I was overwhelmed by his skills, total twat, easy way to get splattered or take out another bike, ie me, on his inside, btw he was so heroic he didn't need to indicate.

So your in the USA now ? ..............with a ZXR400
I reckon here in the UK the cops would have you for careless or possibly reckless driving..................6 points maybe ?? dunno
I've had a clean licence since 1989.
I reckon knee down fun should be reserved for the race track

No I'm in the Uk , I was saying there's good videos of people in mulholland in America scraping knees, elbows and crashing

Yeah most people say that
I'm not trying to say its safe and if I came off I wouldn't injure myself or anyone but it's only around 20-30mph that I'm scraping it, sometimes 40. And i live right by dartmoor in Devon which is mainly where I do it because it's slow twisty open roads so I can see for sure there's no cars and there's nothing much but grass to the side.
Would you guys still not want to do it then?

Re: How many of you scrape knee's on public roads? Opinions?
I used to be like that , always went out with friends for scratching sessions, but as i started racing and got on a track you realise its really not needed on the road, on the road your concious your trying to get your knee down which isnt really the way you want to be riding, get on a track its much safer much more fun and it becomes effortless.Smousley1995 wrote:No I'm in the Uk , I was saying there's good videos of people in mulholland in America scraping knees, elbows and crashing![]()

Re: How many of you scrape knee's on public roads? Opinions?
If you have what sounds like a tasty road, and you can see for sure there is no oncoming traffic (well ahead) I can understand giving it a whirl, I tend to save my exuberance for very specific sections of road I know are relatively safe, no juctions, driveways etc, some fun must be had, just don't do it somewhere dangerous,Smousley1995 wrote:And i live right by dartmoor in Devon which is mainly where I do it because it's slow twisty open roads so I can see for sure there's no cars and there's nothing much but grass to the side.

I couldn't sleep last night worrying about you coming off

Re: How many of you scrape knee's on public roads? Opinions?
I agree with kwakkwak, time and place, I do it, sometimes on purpose sometimes by accident but only on roads I know, the story about the guy doing it into the left hand side street?! That is just stupid, time and place. I actually got stopped by a copper for it, there's 2 roundabouts one after the other before the petrol station where i live and cops sometimes stop in there, not often but sometimes, i came across the roundabout with my knee down and when i pulled up the copper asked me why, i tried giving him some bullshit, didn't work, he said to me that my observation, indicating and lane discipline was all good then he asked me again, so i just said because its fun, he laughed with a shake of his head and just said be careful and let me on my way. Time and place and just be sensible, most people speed, going our for a bit of fun on the bike, but you dont do it in a built up area because it's stupid, save it for the big open roads where you can see what's happening

Cop should have told you to go round Rossi's roundabout with your knee down, across it with the knee down is just plain irresponsibleross46 wrote:i came across the roundabout with my knee down and when i pulled up the copper asked me why

Re: How many of you scrape knee's on public roads? Opinions?
Haha I can't believe he let you go! That was pretty lucky

I do sometimes on roundabouts and stuff (only places I know too) which is trying to scrape them and purely for fun just because I love the feeling
up on the moors though is where I really practice my cornering technique and getting it right because you can see if there's anything coming so then it just happens rather than I'm trying
they're nice corners but you can't open it up too much on the straights because there are always darn sheep walking into the road!
I'm terrible for showing off on roundabouts and stuff if there's other people! I wrote off my last Zxr 400 because I was going through a corner where a couple of bikers had stopped and all sense left my head so I ploughed in not thinking about any technique or control and nastily highsided :wanker learnt my lesson, always make sure your thinking when you go into a corner
and try not to show off....
