Having stupidly cross threaded my sump I'm faced with stripping the bike down to replace the sump pan two days after building it up
, however with the use of a 10mm ratchet spanner you can carefully and successfully remove the headers without having to remove any of the cooling system and surrounding gubbins so long as your header bolts aren't seized. Time efficient mechanics

With my ZXR400 the sump comes off without the need to remove the exhaust

Do you mean loosen the headers or remove them entirely? I certainly can't remove my headers with the rad in place and trying would just muller all the fins to feck. I wouldn't remove the rad though, just take it off the mounting brackets and tie it up clear, that saves work whilst allowing ample access to do the job properly.
I've already posted up elsewhere a quick way to get at the head race bearings for greasing without stripping, so that's another workaround.

Yeah managed to remove them completely without damaging a single fin. Once the nuts are removed and the retaining plates are slid out of the way the headers can be manoeuvred down and out. Patience is the key to not damaging it.
