niggles to be fixed

Post by hudders »

Hi all,

After going for a ride today on my zxr, i noticed a few little niggly things that I just need to iron out. Of my brain.

1. The bike chuggs a little when cold. Is this normal? Is it a matter of carb balancing>?
2. When in 3rd or 4th, the usual engine noise is accompanied by a slightly high humming noise is this normal? it seems to be functioning lovely.
3. The gearbox is a bit clunky and when at low revs in high gear (ie wrong gear :smt018 ) slight grinding noise happens (i know, use the right gear you twat)

Sounds like carbs might be out of balance. Thing is, you have to eliminate that or you won't know what that might be hiding. It will cause poor tickover when cold, although they chug a bit even when fettled. I don't think the humming is much, just gear train / transmission noise. But check you don't have the chain too tight, give it the slack recommended. Too many people run bikes with insufficient slack which is a bad idea :smt011 Ruins the chain / sprockets and can also bugger the output shaft bearings.

The noise when pulling from too low a gear is an operator error as you have correctly identified :smt002 But wrong chain tension can also cause gearchange noise.

Dont worry too much about how it runs when cold, people seem to worry about this, i dont know why. Its more important how it runs when hot if you ask me, thats when its used most.

Digging up an old thread again, but it is relevant!

My bike makes what I assume is a similar grinding noise, but it is when I ride the clutch.
WHich I know is bad... but slow riding in traffic, and sometimes smoothly pulling away causes this sound...

Normal? :S

Also, general gear changes are very clunky.

Oil change is in order very soon, but if it is potentially something else, I would like to know as early as I can obviously ^^

Stop stressing :D
Get the bike to a decent bike mech and just ask him to look and listen.
