Tuning/upgrades

There seems to be more and more members appearing that are racing the ZXR400 so i've created a special section just for you to show off results, discuss meets etc etc.

Tuning/upgrades

Post by R P Corse »

well i think it's about time i started looking at some performance upgrades for my H1.

i've been looking around at exhaust systems, i already have a BEET end can, albeit slightly damaged and would like matching downpipes - but after speaking to a few places... £1300 for a set of new downpipes ... REALLY?! £1700 for the full system! i've also been looking at the MHP headers, however, after many-a-hours or searching this forum, i see people speak of this Roger Middleton who is able to make BEET copies? who is said Roger and how can i get in touch with him?

i'm also looking at getting my cylinder head slightly ported, i've got experience on doing this on my RS125, im more than happy to give it a go myself but i don't have a spare cylinder head, can anyone point me in the direction of some tuners who can do their magic on my engine? i'm over in Surrey/Kent boarder, Bob Farnham is my local place, though from experience with my 2stroke stuff, Mick Abbey is my man to go to... i should ask him if he could do the ZXR's, his work he's done on 2strokes is second to none, beats Stan Stephens and Shiny Red hands down any day of the week!

also looking at cams, this is a funny one as i don't really know how these increase performance if i were to upgrade them, though i have heard that you need to regrind the head? - these arent an essential upgrade, would like info on them and where i could get them from though.

im not looking at getting huge power gains, though would like a little tuning done as i plan on keep her for the next 3years while im at uni, ideally i'd like to gain a touch more midrange as will be living in Wales, plenty of twisties! i've already gone +2 on the rear, very nice acceleration i must say lol

thanks in advance guys.

roger is rmkd, not sure how much zxr stuff he does still? and im not sure of his contact details either, someone will know no doubt.
I think he still builds engines for some people tho, worth speaking to.

Its not a race bike tho mate, i would put the money you will spend, and it will cost, towards a 600. The beat copys where actually cheap tho.
You need to run airboxes on the zxr to get the power, and i just dont think its a good idea on a road bike.
I have a zxr engine (90+hp) i will sell if you want power :smt002

know what your saying mate, appreciate the reply but at this very moment in time, i dont have the £££'s to get a bigger bike, nor do i want a bigger bike, i'd much rather spend time with this bike.

same with engine transplant, i really don't want to faff around with fabricating parts on the frame, much rather keep it a 400 and do some light tuning to it.

the main thing i want to do is the exhaust system!

I know what you mean.
Often one thing leads to the next tho with performance mods as you will know with the 2 strokes.
Im pretty sure those beet copies where on ebay not so long back for around 200 quid, cheap as they offered the same performance as the real deal i heard, rmkd did'nt make them, but i think he will have the contacts.
I would just go for one of them and get her set up on a dyno near you.
Dunno how much cams are goin for now, if someone will sell them.. maybee 250-300 quid?
If you cant find them beet copies, i will probs have a race system in the garage that will be up for sale as soon as i sort thru stuff, along with all sorts of bits like race suspension, steering dampers, etc...

top man, thanks for that info mate!

would definitely be interested in the exhaust system, let me know as and when etc..

also a damper i'd like as well...don't suppose you know if an L model shock fits an H model? straight swap, no cutting etc..

cheers mate

On a budget - I would buy a ram airbox, skim the head (and have the seats & guides done) + get one of the aforementioned downpipes & keep your beet can. Set this up on the dyno with blocked air correctors and the result will amaze you.
